Students discover species -rich dry grass: Natural jewels of the thermal lines!

In spring 2025, 504 elementary school students set themselves from the municipalities of Baden, Bad Vöslau, Pfaffstätten, Bad Fischau-Brunn and Leobersdorf with the fascinating world of dry grass. These special areas are not only species -rich habitats in Central Europe, but also a valuable part of local nature. The landscape maintenance association Thermenine line - Wiener Wald - Wiener Becken accompanied the children in their exploration and thus promoted awareness of biological diversity in the region. MeinDzirk reports of the exciting discoveries: inside with beaker.

During their excursions, the children learned about the creation of these dry lawn and the adjustments that make their residents necessary. The animal species discovered included wild bees, grasshoppers, thousands of feet and impressive butterflies. The preservation of biological diversity also plays a central role: In autumn, the students will actively take part in the care of these sensitive ecosystems.

a network of supporters

23 municipalities and numerous clubs, schools, farmers: inside as well as volunteers and companies form the “Nature region” network of the landscape maintenance association. There is more than just a wide range of plants. Dry locations and the resulting habitats are considered the most diverse areas in Central Europe. How important these habitats are is also in a Article on biological diversity that focuses on the unique conditions for plants and animals in these areas.

Dry locations on lime in warm layers are an Eldorado for field flowers and wild plants. Orchids such as the boy herb and the bee rags find an ideal habitat here, supported by a species-rich flora that has established itself through extensive management, such as grazing or mahd. The wildlife is also diverse: heat -loving reptiles such as the Schlingnatter and birds such as the Dorngrasmücke can be found here.
