Tragic bathing accident: Found a 60-year-old body in St. Johann!

Badesee in St. Johann/Rosental, Österreich - On June 15, 2025, the idyllic St. Johann in the Rosental was overshadowed by a tragic news. A bathing accident in the local bathing lake led to the death of a 60-year-old man from Klagenfurt. Around 7:30 a.m. in the morning, the lifeguard reported the discovery of personal objects on the bank, including clothing, cash and a car key. This discovery started an immediate search action, which mobilized around 80 emergency services, including firefighters from several surrounding communities such as St. Johann/Rosental, Ferlach, and Krumpendorf and the water rescue with 28 forces, including 9 divers. The campaign was also supported by a police helicopter and drones that supported the search from the air.

The intensive search action started immediately after the alarm and included both the search of the bank area and the targeted exploration of the deeper layers of water. Shockingly, the lifeless person was only found at a depth of around 6 to 7 meters around 11.20 a.m. The tragedy apparently occurred on the evening of June 14th when the man drowned. External fault is excluded and there are currently no determined witnesses of the accident.

a lasting problem

The sad events in St. Johann throw a light on a serious problem: the dangers when bathing. According to a current statistics of the DLRG in 2023, 411 people in Germany drowned in water, which means an increase around 31 compared to the previous year. These numbers mark the third year in a row, in which the number of drowned people increases. DLRG President Ute Vogt demands more attention and sensitization of the population, especially the parents of small children to point out the dangers associated with the warm season. Such demands are also of great importance in Austria to prevent similar tragedies.

The local community mourns the loss of the deceased, who was torn out of life far too early due to this bathing accident. We hope for increased education and awareness to prevent further accidents. The diversity of the emergency services and their tireless efforts testify to the strong solidarity of the region, which is together in difficult times. Let us not let ourselves be discouraged, we pull teachings from these incidents.

In order to learn more about similar incidents and the efforts to prevention, we recommend that we follow the statistics and updates of the DLRG. Stay careful and on the hat, while the summer months begin.
