Vienna tackles it: 23 new climate projects for the city are now starting!
Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, Österreich - in Vienna it is now really going into the shower when it comes to climate protection! In the next two years, 23 new climate projects will be launched in the Alsergrund districts, Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. These were selected from over 84 designs submitted, which come from the Viennese population as part of the innovative “Wiener Klimateam” project. The aim of the measures is to green public space, to promote climate -friendly mobility and to strengthen community life. Not only the school year 2024/25 ends on Friday, but also the third round of the Viennese climatic team, which can come up with a broad citizen participation. Over 1,600 ideas have been brought in since autumn 2024, which are now being implemented into concrete projects.
The preparation of the ideas took place in special project workshops, where vague suggestions were specified. Both city experts and the citizens themselves have decisively decided which ideas are being pursued. In a consensus -oriented procedure, the lead projects were selected on three weekends in May and June.
A look at the selected projects
In the Alsergrund district, seven interesting projects were picked out, including:
- A project to increase the use of renewable energies.
- the greening of streets to improve the microclimate.
- The establishment of an energy community for electricity to residents.
- new cycling routes for safe and pleasant bike paths.
In Meidling, residents can look forward to eight new projects, such as:
- The establishment of a free bicycle self-help workshop.
- A permanent biodiversity corridor between the cable work and the Saggedergasse.
The district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus is also active and selects eight exciting projects, including:
- The redesign of Friesgasse into a climate crossing "meeting zone".
- A redesign of Maria from the victory place to a local recreation and break room.
a project with foresight
In the winter of 2025/26, the Viennese climate team will expand into the districts of Josefstadt and Penzing. All Viennese have the opportunity to participate in this future -oriented project, regardless of whether as individuals or in groups. From mid-September 2025, new ideas can be submitted to make our city more climate and livable. Because in the Vienna climatic team, citizens have the opportunity to actively participate in the design of their surroundings. So what could be better than to make your own neighborhood climate?
A look at the projects already implemented shows that commitment pays off. In the pilot years 2022 and 2023, over 1,000 ideas were introduced in various Viennese districts and numerous projects were recommended for implementation. The Viennese climatic team not only includes citizens, but also relies on feedback on any suggestions in order to bring even more momentum into the matter. This is also supported by regular information events and discussion forums, in which experts inform about advantages and challenges of regenerative energies.
The city administration is active in initiating these projects and ensures that financial incentives, such as subsidies or tax benefits, are also available. This not only strengthens the sense of community, but also promotes awareness of environmentally friendly energy sources, which contributes to the creation of a more sustainable and environmentally conscious city.
For more information and insights into the projects, it is worth taking a look at the official side of the Wiener Klimateams, which also presents the findings from the pilot years. This makes it clear: something is really happening here, and everyone can participate to make their own neighborhood sustainably!
