Skatepark Auhof gives way to Mega channel project Krümel!
In the federal capital of Vienna, a lot will change in the coming years. As early as spring 2024, construction work for the new Wiental Canal, the largest water protection project in Vienna. This channel is extended by nine kilometers between the Gaudenzdorfer belt in Margareten and the Auhof skate park in Hietzing. However, the Auhof skate park must give way for the construction work, since the required target shaft, with a diameter of 8 meters and a depth of 13 meters, takes the entire area.
The important project aims to improve water quality in the Vienna flow and to relieve the sewer network in heavy rain. Around 500 million liters of wastewater are led by two million Viennese and 180,000 buildings to the sewage treatment plant in Simmering every day. The existing channel network of Vienna, with over 2,500 kilometers of line length, therefore requires an urgently needed expansion and modernization, such as reported.
The tunnel boring machine "Krümel"
A central element of the project is the tunnel drilling machine that was called "Krümel". Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky personally made baptism and at the same time presented a reading book called "Krümel's adventure under Vienna", which is supposed to bring children closer to the canal building. The impressive machine is 135 meters long, weighs 1,000 tons and was composed of over 20,000 individual parts. It will start at the Gaudenzdorfer belt and drill up to 24 meters daily, equipped with two powerful electric motors, which together deliver about 850 hp.
"Krümel" will drive around 65,000 tons of Tübbinge and raise 105,000 cubic meters of soil, which corresponds to a total weight of around 190,000 tons. In order to accomplish this massive operation, three teams with 20 people each work around the clock in shift operation. Between 10 and 20 truck journeys to the landfill in Lower Austria will be necessary every day.
alternative options and outlook
Despite the inconveniences for the skate park visitors, there is a solution: During the construction activities, the skate park on the Christine-Enghaus-Weg in Hütteldorf is made available. After completing the construction work in 2028, the Auhof skate park will be rebuilt and return to the delight of the athletes.
The entire project is estimated with costs of around 270 million euros. The aim is to connect all existing channels of the adjacent districts to the new Wiental Canal by 2028, which not only improves water protection, but should also relieve the entire sewer network in Vienna, as well as wien.gv.at emphasized.
For those interested in construction and specialists, a focus on sewer connections is placed in the region, with a large number of providers and services available. For example, more information can be found on daibau.at where companies are listed for sewage system, water reservoir and more.
