Mega water pipe under Vienna: Alpine water for safe drinking water!

Penzing, Österreich - Vienna faces a major change in drinking water supply. A 130 -year -old water pipe under the Vienna River at the Baumgarten Bridge is currently being renewed. This measure aims to secure the city's high source water supply and is expected to be completed by July 2025. The new pipe is 70 meters long and leads fresh high source water from the Lainz water tank to the Hungerberg container in Döbling. Today reports that the construction work in April 2024 in the areas of St.-Veit-Gasse, Hietzinger Kai, Hadik- und Zehetnergelasse started.

A special feature of this renovation is the coordination with the construction of the new Wiental Canal. This should not only improve the supply and disposal systems, but also increase the safety of drinking water supply. A envelope tube with a diameter of 1.6 meters was laid under the Vienna River, the U4 and several lanes to enable the installation of the new water tube with a diameter of one meter.

technical details of the renewal

The drilling work took place in the difficult Flysch rock and were carried out with a special tunnel boring machine. A total of 23 reinforced concrete pipes with a total weight of 177 tons were laid under pressure. This is a performance that would not be underestimated that requires a lot of skill and technical sophistication.

The entire measure was planned in such a way that the surface restoration and greening of St.-Veit-Gasse should be completed by October 2025. The shaft will be closed in the summer of 2025 and the new management will be put into operation. Wiener Wasser announces that the next project is already being started in 2026: The renewal of a line from 1910 at the Preindlsteg.

investments in the future

The city of Vienna is investing around three million euros in the renewal of the water pipes and the parallel construction of the new Wien Valley Canal. With these investments, the city not only does justice to its historical heritage, but also ensures the high quality of drinking water, for which Vienna is known worldwide. [Wien.gv.at] (https://www.wien.gv.at/waehring/trinkwasser- main line) notes that the 5th drinking water main line, which will run from Mildeplatz in the 16th district to Sieveringer Strasse in 19th, should also set new standards in the water supply.

So

Vienna invests vigorously in maintenance and the expansion of its supply lines. With the large number of projects that are currently underway, the city will continue to have a safe and high -quality water supply in the future. A good knack for the health of the citizens: inside and the environment, that is the goal of Vienna's water policy.
