Florestania: Plastic waste becomes a walk -in forest in Vienna!

in the heart of Vienna, in the newly designed Village city district in the third, an exciting art and environmental project is currently being built: Florestania. Initiator Mary Maggic, supported by a creative team, transforms plastic waste into a walk -in forest installation that not only invites you to be amazed, but also stimulates thinking. This extraordinary initiative is part of the long-term “art and environment” artificial series, which was launched over 20 years ago by Environmental Office

The inspiration for Florestania brought Maggic from her time in the Amazon area. The name "Florestania" combines the Portuguese word "Floresta" (forest) with "Cidadania" (citizenship) and thus reflects the connection to nature and community. In a creative process, visitors from different age groups and a dedicated design team are shaped together, and not only visually - the installation also brings haptic experiences with it. Plastic smell when entering immediately reminds of your own consumption of plastics, which stimulates reflection.

a room for reflection and dialogue

Florestania shouldn't just be a work of art. It is a room for reflection on the topics of sustainability, recycling and planetary protection. Every weekend, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., interested citizens are invited to participate. The workshops, which are directed by Expert: inside, are the focus. The topics range from creative recycling techniques to herbal medicine to urban botany. These workshops promote an exciting dialogue about environmental protection and the knowledge of our nature. Visitors have the last opportunity to take part in the workshops: Inside on September 6, 2025.

The materials used are deliberately chosen. The use of PVC was dispensed with to avoid toxic vapors. Instead, there are numerous plastics that are used in everyday life, including PET of beverage bottles or PE/HDPE of milk bottles. This conscious selection should help to raise awareness of one's own consumption and to open up new perspectives on the relationship between man and nature.

a contribution to forest protection

Another interesting aspect of Florestania is the opportunity to generate revenues for projects for the protection of real forests by selling works of art. Parts of the installation were prepared for auction, and the entire profit flows into initiatives that are devoted to the protection of forest ecosystems. The art project not only promotes dialogue about environmental and preservation approaches, but also actively supports the preservation of forests worldwide.

Florestania is not only an artistic highlight in Vienna, but also a platform for community learning and active commitment. If you are interested in the project or would like to find out more about it, you can find all information on the website Vormagazin .

It will be interesting to see how Florestania will develop and which creative ideas are the artists: inside and visitors: operate inside in the coming weeks!
