Hernals becomes green: Project revives dead floors and creates habitats!

In Hernals, an exciting project is currently being implemented, which shows how to turn into green living spaces again. The city of Vienna has identified soil seal as a central measure to combat climate change. By promoting projects that give living earth and plants more space, one aims to increase the quality of life of the citizens and to avoid heat islands in the city, as reported.

at the Halirschgasse 1 location, not far from the S-Bahn station in Hernals, the climate workshop, the initiative "Wiener Sukzession" and the residents hand in hand to remove six concrete slabs in the courtyard. The current state of the soil is unfortunately "dead", shaped by sand and gravel without any signs of life. But that should change soon: in autumn the finale greening is planned, in which plants are set to develop a strong root.

a step into the green future

As district head Peter Jagsch (SPÖ) actively supports, the broken concrete material is recycled to build a new ramp in the courtyard. Such initiatives are an important part of the Viennese urban development strategy, which aims to make public spaces sustainable and climate -oriented. This not only includes the greening of courtyards, but also the creation of large green areas and the greening of sidewalks, facades and roofs. wien.gv.at emphasizes that heating islands are to be defused by targeted measures and the quality of life in the cityscape should be improved.

In addition, the city of Vienna pursues the goal of promoting climate -friendly building and planning with various projects such as the Climate Adaption Control System (Casy). The numerous measures for greening are intended to help reduce the stress caused by climate change. Interestingly, experts also see potential in the field of distortion, which, however, are often not fully exploited for legal and financial reasons. According to ioer.de , clear guidelines and the obligation of the public sector are urgently required.

The way to more green in the city

In order to take into account the need for climate -oriented urban design, shading in urban planning should also find more incorporated, as well as the promotion of vertical green spaces and green roofs. Another program, the "out of the asphalt", has the goal of planting trees in densely built -up areas. The gearbox by an “early green” for the construction of green spaces before building is also a top priority.

The decision on how and where these measures are realized is made as part of a joint planning. The city of Vienna has recognized that less concrete and more green are required to create a livable urban environment. And in Hernals a first -class example is set with the project in Halirschgasse, which shows the way to a greener future.
