alcoholic drivers and their dangers

The dangers that start from driving under the influence of alcohol are considerable. In Austria, about 7.5 % of traffic accidents are due to alcohol, which corresponds to 2,676 accidents. Last year 26 people were killed and 3,303 were injured. The legally prescribed maximum limit is less than 0.5 per thousand, which applies to most drivers. However, special attention is paid to the test guide license owners as well as bus and truck drivers, for whom a limit of 0.1 per thousand applies.

The punishments when these borders are exceeded are strict and range from fines to withdrawal of steering authorization and mandatory traffic coaching, in particular from a value of 0.8 per thousand. The legal consequences show that the authorities are determined to make the streets safer. For the drivers who do not adhere to these regulations, it becomes expensive: the fines can be up to 5,900 euros, depending on the exact alcohol content in the blood.

In summary, it can be said that the continuous control measures and the increased figures for alcohol at the wheel show that security on the streets is of great concern to the authorities. The most recent action in Vienna-Donaustadt is another step in the right direction.
