Tyrol integrates bike racks in buses-a step into the bike age!
in Tyrol, a lot is happening in terms of sustainable mobility. The Tirol Verkehrsverbund (VVT) plans to equip most of its public buses with bicycle carriers. "The boom in cycling as a recreational sport makes us even more smart," explains Alexander Jug, managing director of VVT, in a recent report on ride.ch. This measure is intended to enable passengers to make the combination of the public and bike even easier and thus increase the attractiveness of cycling in the region.
The Inn Valley region is already well supplied with S-Bahn, which allow bicycles to take away. In the Ötztal, the buses even rely on trailers for the bicycles, which fueled bike tourism. On the other hand, it is tragic that no bicycle took care of the bus in other valleys. But that should change soon. The VVT plans to install over 350 rear carriers in a total of 650 regibo buses on 350 lines in Tyrol. That is more than half of the buses used.
New offer for cyclists
However, there are also restrictions: the buses on heavily frequented routes, such as the 15 or 18 meter long articular buses, remain without rear carriers. Special routes such as the Hahntennjoch are also excluded from taking the bike. Nevertheless, the prospects are gratifying, because on most routes there are no temporal restrictions on taking bicycle in contrast to Innsbruck.

tourism finances the conversion
It is also interesting that the financing for taking bicycles is in many cases through tourism. This ensures that these offers continue to exist, particularly in touristy -frequented regions. The Ötztal serves as a model example of how to promote bike tourism through creative solutions. Most rear carriers come from Franz Harbeck and can wear up to five bikes. E-bikes are also welcome and the carriers can be conveniently operated by the passengers themselves. In order for the use to work smoothly, the VVT has produced an explanatory video for using the rear carriers - a real plus for all cyclists.
Additional statistical surveys on cycling in Austria show that cycling is often lower and reliable data are necessary to make a sound traffic policy. The current study offers valuable insights into the mobility behavior of cyclists and represents an important step in the direction of adaptable infrastructures, which also take the needs of cyclists. The image is enriched not only by the numbers to cyclists, but also by information on traffic safety and the economic effects of bicycle traffic, which are processed in the study "cycling in numbers".
It remains exciting how the situation for cyclists in Tyrol develops, and with the new initiatives, the bike will surely be very popular as a practical means of transportation in the streets and on the bike paths of Tyrol.
