Train route Mittenwald-Innsbruck closed: Readings and construction work started!
From Saturday, July 12, 2025, the train route from Mittenwald to Innsbruck will be closed for more than a month. This measure is expected to be on September 1, 2025. The reason for the blocking is extensive renovation work that is necessary to bring the infrastructure up to date. The ÖBB report that during this time a replacement of rails is set up between the Innsbruck Central Station and the Mittenwald train station.
The buses for rail replacement traffic will run around every hour between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. However, when taking bicycles, there is to note that this is only possible to a limited extent. The stops for the bike transport are specifically determined: Innsbruck Central Station, Seefeld and Mittenwald Bahnhof. Mayor Enrico Corongiu sees the situation calmly and emphasizes the safety of passengers, which is still guaranteed.
extensive renovation work
A total of around 50 construction measures are implemented along the approximately 30 kilometer route during the closure. A particularly outstanding project is the construction of eight arches of the Inntal Viaduct in Innsbruck. The historical building is rebuilt after over 110 years in coordination with the monument protection. This is an extensive undertaking because the old arches have to be removed and the new component weighs around 2000 tons that is used with hydraulic presses.
In addition, there are also renovations on several railway crossings. Among other things, the transfer in Innsbruck such as Speckweg, Karl-Innerbner-Straße and St.-Georgs-Weg are affected. Depirtions via Tschiggreystrasse or Höttingen driveway are recommended to minimize the impairments.
investment in the future
The total costs for the conversion of the railway hold in Gießenbach and Leithen amount to around 1.9 million euros. These measures are part of a larger renovation program that Deutsche Bahn wants to tackle between 2024 and 2027, with a goal of extensively modernizing the rail infrastructure. The focus is on restoring the performance of the rail, which should also improve the punctuality and reliability of the trips.
The big construction project also brings logistical challenges. Over 250 train journeys are necessary to transport the required materials and machines to the construction site, which requires efficient planning. Up to 100 workers will work on the route at the same time.
The ÖBB recommend all travelers to find out about the current connections online before their driving start to avoid inconvenience. With the comprehensive work that is currently being implemented, those responsible lay the foundation for an even better rail infrastructure in the region.
