Exciting insights: Akme conference of ancient cultures in Innsbruck!
At the end of June 2025, science at the University of Innsbruck was all about the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean. The inter -university conference of the doctoral program "Ancient Cultures of the Mediterranean (Akme)" brought participants: inside from Graz, Salzburg and Innsbruck to promote interdisciplinary exchange and to present significant research results. Organized by the Institute for Archaeologies, the event offered the opportunity to exchange ideas across various disciplines.The AKME program lives from the variety of its disciplines, ranging from old history, antiquity to archeology, Bible sciences and classic philology. Since its foundation in April 2009, the program has seen as a platform that not only gives researchers: inside, but also students of the postgraduate fields. During the conference, an interesting insight into the new premises of the institute in the Ágnes-Heller-Haus was given. Guided tours through the Archaeological University Museum, the Restoration Workshop and the microarcheological laboratory contributed to the lively atmosphere. The AKME program is not only a space for current research, but also has a look at the history of archeology in Austria. An upcoming conference with the topic of "Research history of archeology in Austria: a location determination" in February 2025 is intended to carry out this discipline and show new research perspectives Academia.edu . This focuses particularly on archaeological research until the middle of the 20th century, especially in the old Austrian region.
The recording of important personalities such as Ernst Kalinka, who has earned the early archaeological research in Aguntum, shows the relevance of historical relationships for current research. As a university professor and conservator, Kalinka was active in monument conservation and tried to resume excavations in the 1920s.
