Streets of Styria bloom: wild flowers for more diversity!

In Eastern Styria, the road edges bloom in bright colors. Wild flowers sprout and transform the traffic areas into a small sea of flower. The "Aktion.strassen.bunt" project, which was launched by Styria (Sted) in cooperation with the "Blow & Summen" association, is promoted by biodiversity on the side of the road. As Meinzirk.at, millions of square meters of street-like green in Styria are to be redesigned in the region improve.

Claudia Holzer, the traffic councilor, emphasizes the importance of this Initiative. The first wildflower meadows are already visible in cities such as Feldbach, Gleisdorf and Leibnitz and are looked after by Christine Podlipnig, the project supervisor by the "Blow & Sums" association. She is committed to ensuring that the new flower areas not only beautify traffic, but also offer insects and thus other animals.

nature conservation and cost savings

A particularly interesting aspect of the project is the economic dimension. Mowing less frequently not only saves costs, but also spared resources. That means more nature, but traffic safety remains the highest priority. The employees of the Sted are trained in order to continue to care for the care sector along the road. In workshops and through a “pocket guide” you will learn everything about wild plants and their care.

The project is also to be reversed with a trend that can be observed in many regions. The phenomenon shown by nabu.de shows that the once species-rich wildflower meadows comprised, increasingly being replaced by intensely cultivated areas. In Germany, the diversity of insects has decreased sharply, while the street accompanying green as a retreat for rare plants and animals is becoming more important.

A look over the borders

In a project in Baden-Württemberg, it is also examined how the biodiversity of the road escort can be increased and the maintenance costs can be reduced at the same time, such as hfwu.de For this purpose, 61 permanent observation areas are set up in order to test the different vegetation types and care approaches. It is an unanimous wish to create more space for nature through innovative approaches and less interventions.

At this point there is not only a local, but also a national striving for ecological improvements on our road edges. Whether in Styria or in Baden-Württemberg-the efforts to biodiversity and quality of life are in full swing. In addition, such projects are also a sign that nature conservation and cost savings can go hand in hand, a win-win situation for humans and nature.
