Tatal e-scooter accident shocked by Upper Styria: 61-year-old dies!
In Upper Styria, a tragic accident with an E-Scooter occurred on Wednesday morning, June 11, 2025, in which a 61-year-old man lost his life. The incident occurred between 3 and 4:30 a.m. on the parish road at Mürztalradweg R5, more precisely at the section from Hönigsberg to Langenwang. It is currently unclear why the man came off the road with his e-scooter. He got on the road bank in a light left turn and fell over a slope around one meter high, probably crashed into his head against an iron fence column. It is tragic that the man died at the scene of the accident after he was discovered by a cyclist around 5 a.m., who immediately alerted the rescue workers. Such accidents also skill lightly on the dangers that bring the e-scooters in road traffic.
The numbers for e-scooter accidents show an alarming trend. In 2023, the number of e-scooter accidents with personal injury in Germany rose by 14.1 % to 9,425, compared to 8.260 in 2022. The number of fatalities doubled from 11 to 22, which represents a sad balance for users of these means of transport. According to an analysis, 83 % of the victims themselves were traveling with the e-scooter, including 21 of the 22 fatalities. The most common causes of accidents are incorrect use of roads and alcohol, which underlines the need for more information and security in dealing with e-scooters. Destatis.de reports that young users are particularly affected - 41.6 % of the crashed goods under 25 years old.
safety precautions for e-scooter
The legal framework for e-scooters have been defined in Germany since June 15, 2019. Where available, bicycle paths or protected stripes have to be used, while sidewalks are prohibited. The minimum age for e-scooter drivers is 14 years, and a 0.5-promile limit applies to alcohol-under 21-year-olds can completely do without alcohol. Despite these regulations, the use of such vehicles must be observed critically, since e-scooters can continue to be a high risk of accidents. Compared to bicycles that were involved in 94,468 accidents, e-scooters represent only 3.2 % of the total accident figures, but this is no less questionable. This shows that despite comparatively lower numbers, it is urgently needed to raise awareness of safety in road traffic.
The decline in accidents under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicating agents is gratifying, but a look at the statistics of the police headquarters in Southeasthesses shows that the increase in accidents with e-scooters remains problematic. In 2024 there were a total of 13,859 traffic accidents, some of which are due to the increasing use of e-scooters. In Austria, too, the experts are aware that the safety of all road users should continue to be a top priority.
