Lungau labor market: increase in unemployment among Ü50 year olds!

The current situation on the labor market in Lungau shows a worrying development, as the AMS Tamsweg reports. At the end of May 2025, the unemployment rate was in the Tamsweg district with an estimated 4.2 percent. Compared to the previous year, the quota increased by 0.7 percentage points, while Salzburg with an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent and Austria is 6.9 percent. In the past few months, the reported unemployment in Lungau has increased by 19.8 percent. As of the deadline, 369 people were noted as unemployed, including 205 women and 164 men.

The increase in unemployment in over-50-year-olds, who had an increase of 27.1 percent with 122 unemployed people, is particularly alarming. In contrast, the situation for younger people up to 25 has improved: unemployment dropped by 4.5 percent here. This shows that the challenges on the labor market mainly meet older workers while the youth are lucky.

Open places in the decline

Another worrying trend is the decline more open spots. At the end of May 2025, only 183 workplaces immediately available were registered with the AMS, compared to 335 jobs in the previous year - a decline of 45.4 percent. The number of open apprenticeships also decreased by 23.3 percent at 46. The situation is also evident in construction, tourism and in the health professions, where fewer areas are available.

In April, the number of unemployed people in the Tamsweg district was already 416, whereby the unemployment rate was around 4.9 percent at that time. Unemployment increased by 5.9 percent compared to April of the previous year. The workers over the age of 50 make up most of the unemployed people. This decline in open spots and apprenticeships is a sign that not everything runs smoothly in the Lungau and there is a need for action.

To help the companies in the region, the AMS Tamsweg now offers an impulse advice that responds to the recruitment challenges. These consultations have been known nationwide since 2020 and have offered over 2,300 companies. Since 2023, the focus has also been on ecological structural change and the so -called green skills to promote future -proof jobs.
