Austria's e-car revolution: Vienna leads with over 50% new registrations!

A new trend is emerging in Austria: In some districts, the proportion of electric cars exceeded the 50 percent mark for the first time in new registrations. According to an analysis by the Austria Verkehrsclub (VCÖ), the districts of Vienna Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and Vienna Mariahilf have 58% and 56% of the highest shares in E-cars. But also in other cities there is a gratifying picture for electromobility, so reports ÖKO News .

not only in Vienna, but also in Linz, one can speak of a significant proportion of e-car that amounts to over 28%, which makes the city the leading rider among the state capitals. Lion's share of new registrations in Linz are eliminated on electric cars, while CO2 emissions have risen to almost 153 g/km for new diesel vehicles. This shows that the transformation to electromobility has a lot of potential, such as vcoe emphasized.

regional differences

A look at the federal states shows that Salzburg and Upper Austria each take the top position with a 25% share of e-car. In total there are only two districts in Austria with an e-car share of less than 10%, namely lies with approx. 4%and Reutte with around 6%. A remarkable fact is that the e-car component in the state capitals is consistently over 20%, with Linz at the top with 28.8%. The analysis also shows that Eisenstadt has almost 26% of the highest e-car content among the state capitals, followed by Linz, while St. Pölten forms the bottom with 15%.

The consistent increase in the e-car shares in Austria is related to increasing awareness of climate-friendly mobility. Studies show that CO2 emissions of electric cars are 53% lower compared to their petrol-powered counterparts and can even decrease by up to 70% when using green electricity. Despite the gratifying increase, however, there is a critical point: According to VCÖ, 80% of the diesel cars are approved on companies or legal persons, which reinforces the need to change the tax for these vehicles.

market development and vehicle stock

The development of electromobility in Austria cannot be overlooked. In 2023, around 244,000 electric vehicles were placed on the market, with 155,500 pure electric cars alone. This accounts for a three percent share of the total car stock, and the trend is steeping up. Compared to 2022, the number of new e-vehicle registrations has almost doubled with over 71,000, which is a big step towards more sustainable mobility.

In addition to the increase in new registrations, the infrastructure expansion should also be observed. In 2024, Austria is in a European comparison in eleventh place in the number of e-charging stations at around 18,600, with most charging stations to be found in Lower Austria. Vienna follows with about 2,500 stations, which indicates that the entire infrastructure has to be expanded in order to meet future requirements, so Statista .

A complete switch to electric vehicles is a challenge, but also requires an additional electricity requirement of around 20 terawatt hours per year. The course is set, and with a clear strategy, Austria can achieve its goals for sustainable mobility.
