Emco in Hallein: STILD STILD STAP THE WITHING GOOT!

Hallein, Österreich - A major fire hit the shops of the machine tool manufacturer Emco in Hallein on July 1, 2025. The company's warehouse was completely destroyed, but the production area itself was spared. Managing Director Karl Pichler had initially announced optimistically that production could start again the following day. But the reality looks different: important components are missing, which is why the work has to stand still for at least two months. This was communicated around 390 employees in a meeting.

The situation poses serious challenges. A special inventory revealed that the remaining stock of components was lower than originally assumed. This forces the company to keep the downtimes as short as possible and to return to regular production as quickly as possible. From Friday, July 14, 2025, negotiations on short -time work should begin with the labor market service (AMS) and the union to cushion the effects for the employees.

economic pressure on industry

The problems of Emco are part of a larger trend in the machine tool industry. The year 2024 is forecast by the industry association VDW (Association of German Machine Tool Fabrations) with an expected decline in production from almost 3 % to a nominal 14.8 billion euros. The declines are the result of brake tracks that can be noticeable since the beginning of 2023 in the order intake, which also influence the situation at EMCO. In general, machine purchases are more difficult to finance due to increased interest rates, which further increases the pressure on manufacturers.

Particularly smaller companies are affected by bureaucratic hurdles. These challenges, combined with the long -term trends on the market, fear that the record volume from 2018/2019 (17.0 billion euros) cannot be achieved in the coming years. The global economic framework is also not favorable: the international shopping manager index shows a weak global economy, especially in Europe and Germany.

an outlook on the future

In the middle of all of these challenges, however, a ray of hope is also shown. Areas such as electromobility, wind power and medical technology offer new opportunities to give the industry new impulses. The youth offensive of the junior mechanical engineering should also make it easier for young people to get started with metal processing professions and reduce abortions.

whether Emco finds ways quickly enough to boost production again and support the employees as best as possible. The fire hit the company hard, but active crisis management could be able to smooth the waves and generate new orders.

The coming weeks will be crucial - both for EMCO and for the entire machine tool industry. vienna.at report on the developments from Hallein, while MAV Industrie has the general trends in the industry.
