Wels attacks on Lake Brombach: Authorities give the all-clear for bathers!

Brombachsee, Bayern, Deutschland - recently, an incident in the Brombachsee has made headlines and lifted many bathers worried. In June 2025 there were two attacks from Welsen on swimmers in the popular Baden region in Middle Franconia. But the responsible authorities have now given all -clear. The situation has calmed down after the district office of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen and local fishermen took extensive measures to ensure the safety of the bathers. According to BR it was found during an echo-solot examination that no further catfish in the bathing spots were discovered.

The two incidents caused excitement occurred on June 20 and again the following week. Five bathers suffered minor injuries in the first attack, and the aggressive catfish was killed by the police and then offered a special delicacy in a restaurant in the region. Fortunately, the second incident was less dramatic, but the affected bath island was brought to the shore, and the fish remained intact. According to [TAG24] (https://www.tag24.de/bayern/wels- In-brombachsee-in-Bayern-Entwarung- und-BLICK-Nach-nach-vorne-3401315), these occurrences are not without reason, because the catfish lends their eggs under bathing platforms and tend to show these defies against intrusive swimmers.

The reasons for the incidents

fishing experts suspect that the attacks are connected to the low water level of the lake and the upcoming spawning season. Due to the decreasing water, the catfish could have been pushed closer to the islands of bath. André Macher from the fishing association explains: "The catfish defend their clutches. It is important that we keep an eye on the bathing operation." The Middle Franconia fishing association also found that the spawning period ends these days, which means that the catfish no longer have to protect its spawn. The next spawning period is already imminent, and the possibility of further incidents is not excluded, such as ZDF notes.

In the coming one to two weeks, the anglers have the task of keeping an eye on the bathing area. The district office also plans to coordinate with the Water Management Office and the Fishing Association to develop precautionary measures for the next spawning season in 2026. However, the bathers can relax, because the experts are confident that no further attacks from Welsen will assume in the current situation.

A topic that has triggered many discussions in recent weeks is the restaurant in the region that offers special Waller dishes. The preference for regional specialties ensures that the gastronomy benefits from the experiences at Brombachsee, even if they were originally due to discomfort. Despite the recent incidents, the region does good business. The incidents are an interesting memory of how the living together of humans and nature can sometimes be challenging, but also brings unexpected advantages.
