Violent storm: Muries and basement floods in the Mondseeland!

On Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, a violent storm moved across the Mondseeland and the Feldkirchen district, which resulted in numerous fire brigade operations. At 7.15 p.m. the thunderstorm started in the Mondsee fire brigade section and brought heavy rain within just one hour. Specifically, around 60 liters per square meter fell in the village of Au-See, which led to considerable damage. The Mure blocked the L217 Kienbergwand Landesstraße, whereupon the fire brigade had to react quickly to ensure safety on the street. Fortunately, there was no traffic accident at the time of the meal, since no vehicle was on the affected section. The guiding rail gave in under pressure, but the worst failed to materialize. In total, the emergency services had to work through over 30 operations in the region, according to Meinverkirk.

not only in the Mondseeland, the storm caused concern. In neighboring Gnesau, also on Sunday, a thunderstorm used around 50 minutes. Here, too, the volunteer fire brigades from Gnesau, Himmelberg and Zedlitzdorf could not remain idle with a total of 60 forces. Turracher Straße (B 95) experienced a flood in several places that led to a temporary lock. Keller in the town center was flooded and required quick action by the firefighters who had to pump out the amounts of water. A larger murvice in the Kirchergraben south of Gnesau also led to further challenges, but here too the fright remained without personal and injury cases. Reported 5min.

increased risks and uncertainties

The multi -layered storm events in Austria also raise questions about risk awareness among the population. A study by the Federal Environment Agency shows that awareness of storm and flood risks in the German population is rather low. Less than a quarter of the respondents see a real risk of damage to their home. The link between actual dangers and the opinions of the citizens remains questionable. Despite the experience with flood disasters, a survey of 2021 shows that many people still do not see themselves in danger, which indicates a dangerous misjudgment. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that heavy rain, also deep in Germany, can lead to floods and many believe that they are sufficiently covered by their existing insurance. However, it is often the usual residential building insurance that does not cover such damage. Further information on natural hazards can be found in the current program for a natural hazard check.

The storm on Sunday has impressively shown how quickly the situation can change and what dangers lurk directly in front of your own door. As a community, we have to learn from such events and prepare better in order to be prepared for future weather extremes.
