Steyr in cycling fever: Tour of Austria starts on July 8th!

Steyr, Österreich - The countdown is running: On July 8th and 9th, 2025, the picturesque town square of Steyr becomes the scene of an impressive cycling event. For the largest city in the district of the same name, which is known to have around 38,000 inhabitants, the Tour of Austria is more than just a sporty highlight - it is an event with immense advertising value and a real chance, to spark local enthusiasm. This is not just any stage race, but actually the Grand Depart, which takes place for the first time in * Steyr *

The anticipation in the city grows! On July 8th, the highly expected team presentation starts at 6:30 p.m., in which 140 cycling professionals from 20 different teams will be shown on the town square. Among them are seven World Tour teams and five domestic continental teams, including the *Hrinkow Advarics Cycleang Team *, which is carried out by Dominik Hrinkow. Hrinkow, who is also the managing director of a bike business in Steyr and Linz, was pleased with the sporting enthusiasm in the city and praised the support that he received from Mayor Ing. The stage over the Alps

On July 9, the starting shot for the first stage, which extends over 168 kilometers and has to cope with an impressive 2433 meters of altitude. The cyclists will be sent on the route from 11 a.m., whereby the return to the city square is expected around 2:45 p.m. However, this also has some challenges for the residents: the route is closed to traffic from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which will lead to traffic disruptions. The parking facilities at the Reithoffer official building are also restricted from July 7th to 9th, and changes in bus traffic cannot be ruled out.

Sports City Councilor Christian Baumgarten is optimistic and expects numerous spectators who will attend the event. "The supporting program will also create a mood," he reveals and promises musical entertainment during the team presentation.

A look at the story

The *Tour of Austria *, which was launched in 1949, has a long tradition in Austrian cycling. It used to belong to the UCI category 2.1, but was then classified in the more prestigious category Hors Catégorie. The competition has gained a lot of reputation in recent decades and attracts the best cycling professionals every year. The event, which also serves as preparation for the Tour de France, comprises between seven and ten stages, with the return to Steyr after several years of absence, most recently in 2024.

With the implementation of the Grand Departs 2025, Steyr continues his way to draw attention to himself as a host of such important events. The city looks back on already successfully carried out stages in 1966, 1967, 2016, 2023 and 2024.
