Queertreff Rohrbach: A safe harbor for the LGBTQIA*community!
On February 1 of this year, a new place of encounter in Rohrbach-Berg opened its doors for the LGBTQIA+community. The queer meeting, initiated by the committed Lisa Höglinger, offers queer people a room to network, exchange and simply be themselves. Höglinger, who works as a psychiatric health and nurse, sees the need to create missing points of contact for queer people elsewhere. "Everyone needs a safe place," she emphasizes.
In rural regions such as the Rohrbach district, suitable places are often missing to meet like -minded people. Höglinger wants to change that with her project. The idea for this open meeting point developed through personal exchange with the Hosi Linz. Here all people of the LGBTQIA+community can get in touch with each other from the age of 16. The next meeting is already on July 12th. Discrimination in society, as it unfortunately often occurs, often contributes to social isolation and psychological stress.
mental health and social challenges
The topic of mental health is particularly relevant in the queer community. Studies show that prevalence of mental illness in queer people is significantly higher than in the heterosexual population. The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) reports that over a quarter of the queer respondents have suffered from depression in the course of their lives, compared to less than 10 % in heterosexual people. Sleep disorders and anxiety disorders are also widespread. Transpen to people who affect almost 39 % of anxiety disorders, such as Zeit.de, bear special risks.
The causes of these higher disease rates can often be found in discrimination experiences that affect those affected in different areas of life. According to glamor.de, queer people suffer from minority stress, a factor that favors psychological problems. Income, fear of rejection and structural hurdles are just a few of the challenges with which they are confronted.
the queer meeting as a solution
The Queer meeting in Rohrbach represents a valuable contact point in order to counteract these challenges. Höglinger emphasizes the positive importance of community for mental health: "In a supportive environment, the quality of life can improve significantly." This initiative shows how important it is that queer get rooms in which they can develop freely without having to pretend. A place where cohesion and acceptance are very important.
The engagements like Höglinger are essential to reduce prejudices in society and to create more visibility for the LGBTQIA+community. The Queertreff Rohrbach is a shining example of how a positive change in society can be caused by personal initiative.
