Better travel comfort: modernization of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn starts!
In the region around the Franz-Josefs-Bahn there are big plans for the coming months. The ÖBB has announced the modernization between Kritzendorf and St. Andrä-Wördern for summer 2025 to reduce both the noise level and increase travel comfort. A comprehensive service package includes the renewal of superstructure, track systems and guide lines to create a more effective and quieter rail connection. As Presse-oebb.at is reported from June 29 to August 31, 2025, which will result in a single-track operation. Therefore, a rail replacement traffic for the lines S40 and R40 was set up to support travelers in the best possible way.
But that's not all: ÖBB is also committed to improved noise protection. Here, too, considerable investments flow: a sum of around 16.6 million euros will be invested in noise protection measures on existing routes in Austria in 2024. This includes the construction of noise barriers with heights between 2.1 and 2.6 meters in the municipalities of Kritzendorf, Höflein on the Danube and St. Andrä-Wördern href = "https://presse-oebb.com/news-josefs-werd-leiser-oebbb-Aerrichten-lichten-lichten-im-im-room-krosterneuburg?id=199898&menueid=27021&IMAGIEID=778630&l=deutsch"> ÖBB . The financing is carried out by cooperation between the ÖBB with the state of Lower Austria and the municipality of Klosterneuburg.
noise protection for residents: inside
The noise barriers are particularly important for the residents: inside, as they are supposed to reduce acoustic stress in the area. From summer 2024 to 2026, these wall installations are continuously built. In Höflein on the Danube, too, an additional noise barrier is added to around one kilometer to further protect the living environment. The measures that have been planned in close coordination with the municipalities since 2009 not only contribute to noise reduction, but also show the commitment of the ÖBB to improve the quality of life on site, according to the ÖBB .
Especially during the construction work, residents and travelers have to prepare for inconvenience. Noise, dust and increased truck traffic cannot be avoided. Railway crossings are blocked during this time and signposted diversions are set up. Changes to customer trails and changes to the platform are also expected during the construction phase.
A look into the future
With these extensive measures, ÖBB pursues the goal of sustainably improving the rail infrastructure for rising rail traffic. By 2029, investments of a total of 21.1 billion euros have been planned to create modern rail systems and to ensure a punctual rail service. Innovative construction methods are used to minimize disorders during the work, as the Deutsche Bahn explained. The regular exchange and the consideration of residents: Inside, the focus is on enabling harmonious coexistence between rail operations and quality of life. This modernization on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn could not only affect rail traffic itself, but also radiate positively on the entire environment.
