Self -determination law: New gender entry in Schwäbisch Gmünd!

How does the application work?

In order to be able to change your gender entry, applicants must register it at the registry office at least three months in advance. The personal explanation that the new entry of the gender identity can be submitted after three and at the latest after six months. Various documents are required for the applications: an ID document and the birth certificate. Married persons must also provide evidence of their marriage.

The SBGG also enables the choice of gender -neutral first names or mixed forms, although a new change in the first name is usually only possible after one year - with exceptions for minors. This should also take into account the individual needs of the applicants without major hurdles.

A look over the borders

The innovations that apply in Schwäbisch Gmünd and beyond in Germany are not unique. Similar laws already exist in more than 16 countries worldwide, including Argentina, Chile and Denmark. These movements are part of a larger trend towards more sexual diversity and acceptance, which is becoming increasingly important in society. If one compares the annual 4,000 changes to the gender entry in Germany with reports that speak of up to 15,000 registrations on November 1, 2024, there is a certain interest and growing awareness of gender identity.

With the entry into force of the SBGG and the first positive results in Schwäbisch Gmünd, it becomes clear that the new law is a step in the right direction, which enables the people concerned to have a bit more quality of life and self -determination.
