The focus: traditions and events around June 21!

The summer solstice is just around the corner! On June 21, more precisely at 4:41 a.m., we reach the highest possible position of the year. This not only means the ridiculously long day, but also marks the official start of the astronomical summer. But what exactly is behind this tradition?

The summer solstice is celebrated in numerous European cultures with festive customs. The volunteer fire departments are actively involved in the Bruck region, particularly in the Bruck region by lighting Sonnwendfeuer. For example, the Göttlesbrunn fire department is already collecting wood to prepare the traditional campfire for the celebration in Altenberg. These fire are often accompanied with music, dance and an opulent feast, which makes the community experience special.

fire and traditions in Bruck

Numerous solstice celebrations are planned in Bruck and the surrounding area. On June 21 at 3 p.m., for example, the celebration will be celebrated at Hainburger Schlossberg, while the celebration begins in Altenberg from 5 p.m. The Petronell Carnuntum invites you to the fire station from 5 p.m., and on the festival meadow in Hof there will be a lot of celebrations from 6:30 p.m. In addition, on June 22nd from 9 a.m. there will be a solstice tournament at the Sarasdorf sports field.

A special event is the celebration in Hainburg, which is considered one of the oldest traditions in the region. Here the celebrants jump over the flames, which is supposed to bring happiness and health - although this tradition is associated with a certain risk. Historically, the church in the Middle Ages did everything possible to combat it. Interestingly, June 24th was established to the Baptist as the festive day by Johannes, which also brought the Solzwendfeiden the name "St. John's Fire".

Stonehenge and the global context

A highlight of the Sonnwendfeierers is the largest event in Europe: the celebrations at the Stonehenge in England. There the famous Steinfeld forms an impressive orientation with the rising sun during the summer solstice. In order to make the experience accessible to everyone, English Heritage launched the Skyscape website. This platform enables people worldwide to experience heaven over Stonehenge and to learn more about the movements of the sun, moon and planets. The solar orientation of Stonehenge comes to life on this website and not only lets users feel the history, but also the mystical connection between humans and nature, as English Heritage reports.

The summer solstice is not only an astronomical event, but also a cultural festival with deep roots. From Bruck an der Leitha to Altenberg to the historical sites in England - the celebrations bring people together and let the traditions come to life. Even if it depends on various factors in some years, when it will be celebrated, one thing is certain: we look forward to the upcoming celebrations and all the beautiful traditions that revive.
