13-year-old seriously injured: drivers dazzled sun during accident!

A serious incident shook the community in Lower Austria on Friday evening when a 13-year-old teenager was seriously injured in an accident on the B14 between St. Andrä-Wördern and Zeiselmauer. The young person was traveling with his father when he crossed the road at the end of the bike path. His father stopped, but for the boy it was the last moment of carelessness, because an approaching car caught it and dragged him along, like reported.

The young cyclist did not wear a helmet at the time of the accident, which contributed to the serious injuries. He was immediately flown to the hospital with an emergency helicopter. The 19-year-old driver who caused the accident said that the deep sun dazzled and that he had not seen the cyclists before. Such statements are alarming and raise questions about traffic safety.

a worrying trend

The current accident statistics are alarming. According to Tagesschau a total of 441 cyclists died in road traffic in 2024, a decline of 33 compared to the previous year, but a worrying increase in ten-year comparison. Cyclists now represent every sixth death in road traffic, a fact that may not be ignored.

It is particularly tragic that about 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents with personal damage were collisions with cars. In more than three quarters of these cases (75.3 percent), drivers wore the main debt. This is a clear call to all road users, especially drivers, to be aware of their responsibility in road traffic.

older cyclists particularly at risk

Another worrying trend is evident among the older cyclists: almost two thirds of the fatally injured cyclists were 65 years or older. With e-bikes, this proportion was even 68.8 percent, which means that older people are particularly at risk. These findings are alarming and underline the need to promote safe cycling infrastructure and education.

The numbers speak a clear language: A total of 2,759 people died in road traffic in 2024, which has been a decline of 18.3 percent since 2014. But the increase in the fatally crashed cyclists by 11.4 percent compared to 2014 does not let us come to rest.

It is now up to all of us to improve security on the streets and to raise awareness of the dangers in road traffic. Stay vigilant, be careful and pay attention to each other - this is the only way we can prevent tragic accidents like that on Friday evening.
