Blood donation urgently needed: This is how you can save lives!

Wolfsberg, Österreich - The situation of the blood donations in Austria has increased further in the past few weeks. The country currently needs more blood than is available, which is particularly critical in the hot summer months. As meinzirk.at is required every 90 seconds to save a blood. After an accident, during operations or at births. Therefore every donor is required!

An alarming aspect is that more than 5,000 blood donations are currently missing. In order to be able to supply the patients well in the summer, at least 15,000 blood canned goods are required. The situation is so explosive that Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and other high -ranking representatives such as Federal Police Director Michael Takacs and Michael Opriesnig from the Austrian Red Cross urgently call up the population to donate blood. After all, blood cannot be produced artificially and can also only be kept for 42 days.

appointments and requirements for blood donation

The Red Cross has already scheduled several blood donation campaigns to fix the bottleneck. The upcoming dates are:

  • 14. July 2025: St. Margarethen i. Lav., Club house, 3:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • 17. July 2025: St. Georgen i. Lav., Kulturhaus, 3:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • 28. July 2025: Wolfsberg, district office of the Red Cross, 3:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Further information on blood donation dates can be found on the Red Cross website. If you want to donate blood, you have to meet several criteria: People between the ages of 18 and 70 can participate in a donation, although first donors must not have reached the age of 60 at the time of their first donation. They also have to weigh at least 50 kilograms. Women can donate up to five times, men up to six times a year, provided that there is a minimum distance of 8 weeks between two full -blooded donations, such as Gesundheitskasse.at

special challenges in summer

The summer months represent a special challenge - many people are on vacation and participation in blood donation actions is stalling. This is also evident from the fact that only 16% of the blood donations come from 18 to 25 year olds. In the age group of 51- to 65-year-olds, however, it is around 31%. This fact makes it clear that greater awareness of the need for young donors must be created. For many patients in the hospitals, a blood television can be vital. After returning from holiday areas, many donors have to pause due to impending restrictions, such as healthcare.at determined.

A total of 211,559 Austrians donated blood in 2024 - this corresponds to 3.35% of the person capable of donating. Even if the numbers are currently worrying, these actions show that often only a small impetus is required to work for a good cause. The need for blood remains high, and the next opportunity to make a contribution is just around the corner.

For everyone who would like to help, the doors of the blood donation campaigns are wide open. Don't wait and give hope and live!
