Austria's first recycling system for mineral wool is being built in Ferndorf

Ferndorf, Österreich - A new wind blows in Ferndorf, where Knauf plans to build Austria's first recycling facility for mineral wool. For a whopping 30 million euros, the system, which can recycle both glass and stone wool, is put together. Construction work begins soon and commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2026. This initiative not only benefits environmental protection, but will also create new, sustainable jobs in the region.

"Austria plays a pioneering role in the recycling of insulation materials," emphasizes Udo Klamminger, Managing Director of Knauf Insulation Austria. The new facility will be able to process all types of mineral wool, including those that come from dismantling and renovation projects, regardless of the manufacturer. Knauf insulation thus sets a strong sign in terms of sustainability and resource conservation.

a location with tradition

Ferndorf has an impressive tradition in insulation material production. Insulation and acoustic boards made of wood wool have been manufactured here since 1924. Until 2009, the location was even an important production site for stone wool. The Knauf group in Ferndorf currently employs over 120 people. The new recycling system is intended to further increase this number, which has enormous potential for the region.

Joachim Wieltschnig, project manager of the project, highlights the ecological and economic relevance of the system, especially with regard to the ban on the landfill for mineral wool, which will apply in Austria from January 1, 2027. "With the new system we offer a practical solution for this problem," says Wielnig.

a step into the future

Knauf Insulation is already relating to recycling. The glass wool products sometimes consist of up to 80 percent recycled materials. The resulation resulation with resolution of insulation residues directly enables construction sites and ensures that waste can be collected and prepared in a variety of varieties via the Mineralwolle- Recycling.com variety. This is not only practical, but also an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the building sector.

The CO2 balance of the Knauf Insulation mineral wool is positive after 95 days due to the excellent insulation performance. With the new recycling facility, the company confirms its commitment to the Austrian government's climate goals. The efficiency in the insulation of buildings can help to achieve the climate goals and at the same time to work resource -saving.

Overall, the investment of Knauf Insulation will not only boost the local economy, but will also set an important signal for a sustainable future. Austria's first recycling plant for mineral wool is a step in the right direction - there is something!
