Heat wave in Carinthia: Red warning level activated - this is how you protect yourself!
The heat wave, which has been breaking over Carinthia for weeks, has now reached a new climax: for the first time, the highest heat warning level (red warning) for parts of the federal state was proclaimed. This is reported by the Kleine Zeitung and refers to the communication of Geosphere Austria. Among others are affected by Klagenfurt, Villach, Klagenfurt-Land, Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg, which will have to expect extreme temperatures in the coming days.
The last week of 38.3 degrees in Feistritz OB Bleiburg already brought the highest values, and for this Wednesday even the hottest day of the year is expected with temperatures up to 35 degrees. Even tropical nights with values over 20 degrees bring additional loads for the population, especially since Klagenfurt has now experienced the 13th heat day in a row.
campaign heat protection plan
In view of the devastating effects of the heat, the Carinthian heat protection plan is now activated, which integrates around 900 facilities, such as old people's and nursing homes as well as hospitals. The plan was already presented at the beginning of the summer at the first Carinthian heat protection day in Villach and takes into account regional peculiarities. Health Councilor Beate Prettner has pointed out the health risks that go hand in hand with such heat periods. In the revised heat protection plan, there are also concrete tips on how the citizens can protect themselves and others. This includes drinking a lot - even without a feeling of thirst - and avoiding physical exertion, especially between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. In addition, the living rooms should be kept cool by ventilating them in the morning and darkening during the day. If you take medication, you should consult your doctor, as some can influence the heat regulation of the body.
Special challenges for vulnerable groups
The heat wave not only affects the daily routines, but above all on the health of people. According to the Robert Koch Institute, vulnerable groups are particularly affected by the health risks: older people, pregnant women, children and people with chronic diseases. These groups must be particularly protected and supported, since the extreme heat has considerable dangers for them.
The RKI emphasizes the need for effective heat protection and the importance of good monitoring in order to provide information in good time. In Germany, regular evaluations examine the heat -related effects on mortality, and in Austria it will also be necessary to take similar measures to protect stressed population groups.
The situation is clear: While the temperatures are screwing up further, it is now important not only to be careful yourself, but also to have an eye on the people in the area who may need support. Around 500 volunteers are ready to help shopping and other everyday needs for older or impaired people. Therefore, it remains to be hoped that the population will take the warnings seriously and follow the heat protection plan accordingly.
