Focus on sustainable fashion: Stöttera celebrates Reuse's success!
In the small Stöttera, the association "Because it makes sense" opened its doors a year ago and has been enthusiastically accepted by the population since then. Founded by Christine Koblmiller, the association pursues clear goals: Reuse, recycling, reduce and upcycling are the focus of his activities. Here, creative products such as bags, animal beds and aprons are sewn from no longer useful clothing, which are not only environmentally friendly, but also arise with a lot of love and craftsmanship. The association acts as a hub between donors and the needy and recently celebrated its first anniversary at Hauptstraße 117, where the volunteers play a major role.
Around 30 percent of the range consists of new goods, which shows that new products can also have a place in sustainable purchasing. In addition, the association regularly offers workshops and events related to upcycling to promote awareness of resource conservation. In cooperation with the Burgenland waste association from the "Reuse Network", the donation acceptance is organized, and the income is flowing to cover the rental costs, commercial fees and other expenses.
Why are second-hand shops so popular?
shopping has a lot for itself - and not only the fun, but also the opportunity to buy sustainably. Second hand shopping is now an environmentally friendly alternative to the throw-away company. Not only is the purchase of used clothing an environmentally friendly decision, the saving of money can also be delighted. The fashion industry is often criticized because it often violates environmental and human rights. Incidents such as the accident in the textile factory "Rana Plaza" eight years ago did little to change the grievances.
more and more consumers are therefore calling for sustainable practices, especially in the fashion industry. The association "Because it makes sense" fits a growing trend that encourages consumers to support events such as the "Fashion Revolution Week" in order to draw attention to fair and sustainable production standards. The textile industry is a real environmental sinner - around 1.2 billion tons of CO₂ are emitted annually, which corresponds to five percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The future of fashion is sustainable
The fashion industry is experiencing a change as part of the upcycle trend. Upcycling means converting old materials into new products, whereby the focus is on resource conservation and creativity. For 2025, an increase in textile waste to 110 million tons and a doubling of the recycled textiles to 30 million tons will be forecast. In the association "Because it makes sense", this development is already actively promoted. The design process in upcycling includes various steps: from material inspection and concept development to the creation of patterns to the actual implementation of the new products. Popular materials include jeans, cotton and leather that can be processed into unique designs. Upcycling not only promotes creativity, but also the local community by creating jobs in the craft sector and raising awareness of sustainable fashion.
Christine Koblmiller and her team put on a helping hand: "Volunteers are essential for us," she emphasizes. If you want to get involved, you are very welcome because the club is constantly looking for support for various activities. As the association and similar initiatives show in Germany, sustainable action and second-hand shopping in society are highly valued and could play a crucial role in the future of the fashion industry.
