Family in need: Fire brigade saves sailors on Lake Wörthersee!

In the afternoon of June 20, 2025, the fire brigade was dramatic at Wörthersee. A family, consisting of mother, father and two children, was on the water with her sailboat when the sail was heavily damaged and made the boat unable to maneuver. The auxiliary engine did not let themselves be put into operation in these conditions, which caused the family to get dangerously into a predicament. Fortunately, the concerned relatives alerted the emergency services at 4 p.m. According to Kleine Zeitung came to rescue.

The firefighters did not hesitate long and steered a boat to the helpless family. After a gripping half hour, the sailboat was successfully secured and, together with the exhausted family members, towed towards Loretto. There the boat was back in a buoy. Fortunately, the family was unharmed throughout the incident, which she also owes to the rapid and experienced help of the fire brigade. According to 5 minutes took around a three-quarter hour.

on the same day, but in the evening, there was another incident at Wörthersee, which had the potential to lead to a much larger disaster. Around 7:45 p.m., an attentive 75-year-old Klagenfurt discovered a fire that had broken out on an electric motor boat. This fire quickly spread to a boathouse, which was urgently called for concerned residents and fire brigade. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire brigade, spreading to other boat houses could be prevented. The emergency services reported that "fire from" could be reported at 10:40 p.m. A total of three boats were damaged and the boathouse burned down completely. Fortunately, there were no injuries here either, such as the Kurier reported.

In the course of the operation, an oil barrier was set up to avoid an environmental risk. A landing chemist examined the site and found that there were no acute dangers. Nevertheless, the Wörthersee-Süduferstraße was closed on both sides between Reifnitz and Maiernigg until 11:00 p.m. in order not to make it difficult for the emergency services and to ensure the safety of the residents.

The events on Lake Wörthersee once again show how important fast action and the work of the volunteers and professional fire brigades are. While a family got home safely thanks to the rapid rescue operation, the firefighters fought against the flames at the same time to avert worse.
