Vienna: Eight districts without a fatalities - but the danger is growing!

A third of the Viennese districts were able to breathe a sigh of relief in 2024 and did not record a single fatal traffic accident. These happy regions include the inner city, Wieden, new building, Josefstadt, Alsergrund, Hietzing, Währing and Liesing. However, the decline in accident -free districts is alarming: from 15 in 2023 the figures go back to only 8 in 2024. Nevertheless, the overall balance of traffic safety in Vienna is less gratifying. The number of traffic fats rose to 20 in 2024, an increase around 8 compared to the previous year. The districts of Donaustadt, Favorites and Landstrasse, such as [Wiener district leaf] (https://wienerbezirksblatt.at/acht-bezirke-null-verkehr-wien-kann-kann- Mehrheit-chaffen/), are particularly reported.

In addition to the increasing death figures, the traffic experts complain about the increase of seriously injured people, who rose from 559 to 646. This corresponds to almost 10 % of all traffic accident victims in the city. In comparison, a consideration of other federal states shows that the proportion of seriously injured there is almost twice as high. Surprisingly, the Josefstadt can be seen here in a good light, with only 6 seriously injured in 2024, followed by Margareten and Hernals, where 13 people were seriously injured.

demands for more security

The VCÖ's transport committee (Verkehrsclub Austria) calls for urgent measures to improve traffic safety, especially in residential areas. So there should be more encounter zones, clear traffic tours and safe transitions. "Tempolimits of 30 km/h in residential areas are a step in the right direction," says the experts' statements. In particular, the width sidewalks and clear intersections contribute to the reduction of serious accidents. The necessary steps to avoid danger are also supported by Destatis, whose statistics show how important prevention is.

But what does the traffic situation look beyond the national borders? A look at Germany reveals that the traffic figures there also show similar ways. Around 2.5 million traffic accidents were registered in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 4.7 % compared to the previous year. Tragically, the dead and injured have also increased there in recent years. The increase in the fatal pedestrians is particularly striking by 18.8 %.

preventive measures and decline in accidents

The traffic experts appeal to all road users to comply with the speed limits and to avoid distractions, especially through smartphones. A regularly carried out vehicle maintenance can also contribute to a positive development. [Wochenblatt] (https://www.wochenblatt.de/ratgeber/auto-technik/ Mehr-verkehrsicherheit-in-deutschland) also emphasizes the need to use new technologies to further improve traffic safety.

In total, the statistics and demands show that there is still a lot to do to ensure traffic safety in Vienna and beyond. While a third of the districts can be considered exemplary, the numbers for the other districts are in a troubling relationship. The challenge remains to sustainably lower the number of traffic fatalities and to get closer to the goal of a safe street landscape.
