White widow: Provocative theater staging causes excitement!

in Vienna is currently being performed in the Volks Theater a very special piece that comes up with a fresh and provocative approach. "Europe" from the director Kurdwyn Ayub takes the audience on a trip to 2666, where a dark and burlesque world develops under the eerie regime of the "Islamic State of Europe". "Europe" shows the struggle of a queen who brings a new white man to bed every night just to eat him greedy in the morning of a gigantic, black sci-fi spider. The title of the piece is also remarkable because it is presented in Arab letters and thus puts the cultural connotations in the foreground, as the Kurier reported.

The piece combines realism with dance performances and a mixture of different music styles, including the hits from Rednex and Britney Spears. This unique mix creates an exciting atmosphere, even if some reviews indicate that the staging initially works strongly, but tired after about an hour. Particularly noteworthy is the coarse tone, which is reinforced by the Neuköllner rapper Adden. The mixture of trashy farce and serious topics is supported by Georg Friedrich as an old white man who attributes the narration, and supported by a palace-end (played by Benny Claessens), who surprises with a weird Berlin hipster monologue.

strong center of the action

A central point in the staging is the figure of the Cezaria, embodied by Samirah Breuer. It is the alter ego that the authoritarian regime of her macho mom, represented by the queen, wants to bring down. In the middle of the tires of the grave comedy and frequent deaths, it is the moments in which the characters in the chat tone talk about their roles in the cultural business that captivate the interest of the audience. The piece deals with the exotic image of the Orient and offers an interesting reversal to serve clichés of the post-colonial east-west clashes.

An element of the piece that attracts special attention is the narrative about Samantha Lewthwaite, known as the "White Widow", which is embodied by Dieter Weißmann. Lewthwaite, born in Banbridge in 1983, Northern Ireland, became known after the terrorist attack of July 7, 2005, in which her husband Germaine Lindsay was involved. Her turbulent life story, which is characterized by upheavals and an escape from the police, opened a deeper examination of terrorism and identity, as well as Wikipedia documented.

A look behind the scenes

The director Kurdwyn Ayub and the entire production are in an exciting dialogue with the topics of social change and the collision of cultures. This project is supported by the work of initiatives such as FG Dekolonial , a specialist society that works for racism-critical approaches and the analysis of global inequalities. With interdisciplinary access, the goal is to question and decolonize deep -seating processes and structures.

"Europe" is therefore not just a play, but an urgent comment on social issues that also affect us in Austria, and calls on the audience to deep reflections on identity, power and prejudices. The mixture of humor and serious messages promises that the "Orient Express" will provide plenty of conversation in this case.
