Alarming numbers: Turn venereal diseases - exhibition in Vienna!
A serious look at venereal diseases: The Natural History Museum (NHM) in Vienna opens up a comprehensive special exhibition that deals with the increasingly present topic of the sexually transmitted infections (STI). In times when an increase in venereal diseases is recorded across Europe, enlightenment is essential. According to the European Health Agency ECDC, the number of gonorrhea cases has increased to almost 100,000 in 2023. At the same time, the syphilis cases in the EU and the EEA have doubled to over 40,000.
The W24 reports that the exhibition in the historic fool's tower treats numerous diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, HPV and HIV. NHM General Director Katrin Vohland emphasizes how important it is to speak openly about these topics. In addition to historical moulages and current photos of clinical pictures, the stigmatization of infected people is also discussed.
prevention and clarification
The exhibition pursues the goal of prevention. Preventive measures are particularly important because many sexually transmitted diseases can go hand in hand with lifelong medication. General practitioners Horst Schalk observes an increase in cases in his practice and attributes this to changed sexual behavior. "Tests are recommended for symptoms such as discharge or rashes," says Schalk, but points out that many infected people do not show symptoms.
But how can you protect yourself? A central point are condoms. These not only offer protection against unwanted pregnancy, but also from STIS. The security of the condom is between 50 and 90 percent, depending on the appropriate application. It is important to check the durability and size of the condom before use. The Federal Ministry of Health explains that there is an effective protection, especially in gender and anal intercourse, but the risk of infection remains when unprotected areas come into contact.
The dangers of STIS and their symptoms
Several sexually transmitted diseases are caused by different pathogens: bacteria such as syphilis and gonorrhea, viruses such as HIV and HPV as well as fungi and parasites. The symptoms can be varied, but often there are no signs. Situations in which itchy changes in the skin, unpleasant discharge or pain when urinating occur should be taken seriously. In such cases, a visit to the doctor is advisable to enable early detection and treatment.
Andrea Brunner from AIDS Hilfe Vienna demands a more comprehensive strategy for sexual health in Austria to improve the educational work and get the topic of STI from the taboo zone. Also the Who> appreciates that about a million new Stilfalls are registered every day, which is all the more important.
The exhibition in the NHM is an important step to put this sensitive topic into the light and to stimulate discussion. Only through open conversations and comprehensive education can the awareness of the risks of StIn. Finally: prevention is the best medicine.
