Free swimming courses for 1,068 Viennese children - register now!

Learning to swim swimming in summer will be again for many Viennese: inside for child's play. As part of the “Water Adventure - Free Swimming Courses” project, 1,068 children and young people can look forward to free swimming courses that will take place between the end of June and the end of August 2025 in seven urban swimming pools. Registrations start on June 2, 2025, and all interested parties should think about it, because the places are awarded according to the principle of "First come, first serve", such as [meinzirk.at reported] (https://www.meinbezirk.at/wien/c-freizeit/anzarten-fuer-1068- cost-swimming course plaze-in-wien_a7351772).

The courses are based on the children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 17 and comprise a total of 164 swimming courses, including eight special “water fun” shorts for the youngest swimmers: inside. Each course consists of ten units in which a maximum of six participants are looked after individually. The experienced swimming instructors of the Viennese bathrooms not only support the course participants in learning the various swimming styles, but also offer the opportunity to acquire swimming badges. In addition, the participants enjoy free admission to the swimming pools on the course days, and an accompanying person can come with free, which makes this offer even more attractive.

The participating swimming pools

The following baths offer the free swimming courses:

  • Amalienbad: June 30th to August 8, 2025
  • Döblinger Bad: June 30 to July 11, 2025
  • Theresienbad: July 28 to August 8, 2025
  • Hietzinger Bad: July 28 to August 8, 2025
  • Großfeldsiedlungsbad: July 14th to July 25th, 2025
  • Simmeringer Bad: August 18 to August 29, 2025
  • Donaustädter Bad: August 18 to August 29, 2025

The project was launched as part of the "Children's and Youth Million", an initiative of the City of Vienna that has been funded since 2021. Young people, such as from the Jugendzentrum Just Wienerberg, actively contributed to finding ideas, which was emphasized by Vice Mayor Bettina Emmerling as essential. In this initiative, suggestions from young Viennese can be submitted every two years; This time 148 ideas were submitted and 10 projects for implementation were selected, which also include these free swimming courses, as well as [wien.gv.at informed] (https://presse.wien.gv.at/presse/2025/30/kinder-und-jugendmillion- Annertestart-fuer-free swimming courses).

What can the participants expect?

The swimming courses not only offer the mediation of basic swimming techniques, but also the opportunity to strengthen self -confidence in the water and to reduce the fear of water. The courses start on June 30th and end on August 29, 2025. To ensure that the children and adolescents are in the best hands, the courses are led by tested swimming teachers. Another highlight is the presence regulation: with 80 percent presence, the acquisition of a swimming badge is possible, which is a special incentive for many young swimmers.

For the parents, it may be exciting to know that the Vienna swimming school also offers a variety of children's swimming courses that are aimed at somewhat older children. These promote the development of the four swimming styles from the age of 4 and, after careful performance analysis, offer the possibility of ascending in hobby or competition groups, as can be read on [swimming school wien.at] (https://www.schwimmschule.at/schwimfs-wimm courses/).

Overall, the project offers an excellent opportunity for the young Viennese: inside, learning the safety -relevant handling of water and at the same time spending a great time in the outdoor pool. So, don't forget - on June 2, the registration is started!
