Two 16-year-old boys broke into the apartment of a friend in April, assuming that the victim was not there. Surprisingly, however, this stepped into the room what the situation escalated. One adolescents beat the victim while the other pulled a knife to supposedly protect himself, as Milan K. (16) explained. According to their statements, they were targeting 200 grams of marijuana, which they wanted to steal, but they found nothing when searching the apartment. The attack not only left physical injuries to the victim, including a rib injury, but also led to serious psychological problems. After the incident, the victim is now being cared for closely and demanded 14,740 euros in pain and suffering. The court ultimately appealed to 5,000 euros, whereby further claims can be asserted under civil law. The defense of the young people emphasized that they were well brought up and regretted their "big mistake". Both guys were confessed and had already taken part in a car training during the pre-trial detention or planned to do the Matura.

The judges decided to guilty because of severe robbery and severe coercion. They imposed in prison of 24 months for one and 21 months for the other youngsters, of which 8 or 7 months must be served. In addition, the court ordered anti-violence training, probation and a ban on contact. Such measures are essential to get the young people on a better way and to keep them from further crimes.

youth crime is a topic that is not only important in Austria, but worldwide. Statistics show that a large majority of young people who become delinquent does this only episodically. According to a survey, as documented by [bpb] (https://www.bpb.de/themen/recht- justice/gangsterlaeufer/203562/jugendkriminalitaet-fahngen-und-fakten/), up to 70% of the pupils stated that they have become criminal in the past 12 months, even though most of them commit only light, typical offenses. Serious violent offenses are the exception, which also becomes clear in this case.

preventive measures

In order to avoid such turbulent incidents in the future, institutions such as the Federal Ministry of Youth are working on effective strategies for the prevention of youth crime. These initiatives include the promotion of dialogues and the creation of thematic focus, whereby an interdisciplinary approach between schools, police and youth welfare is of great relevance. The Ministry has clear goals to offer youth a perspective and to strengthen their integration, such as BMFSFJ underline.
