Line 18 is extended: new stops and better connection from 2026!

The tram line 18 in Vienna will be significantly expanded from 2026. The expansion between the U3 Schlachthausgasse and the U2 stadium will include a distance of 3.1 kilometers that brings seven new stops. This was announced in a recent report by . The planning aims to improve the connection of the Prater and also offer cyclists more space.

The start of the construction work will be in the Meiereißrasse area in front of the stadium, while from July 2025 further work on U3 Schlachhausgasse and Ludwig-Koeßler-Platz will take place. The new infrastructure will not only delight commuters and tourists, but also the environment by reducing the emissions by up to 1,300 tons of CO₂ per year, since many switch to the car and switch to the open.

new stops and transport adjustments

The route of line 18 will in future lead from the U2 station stadium via Meiereiße and Stadionallee to the U3 Schlachhausgasse and further to the U6 Burggasse-Stadthalle. The new stops also include one on Sillerweg, which enables direct access to the Ernst Happel Stadium. This is a significant improvement in particular for sports fans.

The planning and mobility councilor Ulli Sima emphasizes the importance of the new connections to urban development areas and local recreation areas. In addition, the expansion of the tram line is also supplemented by an additional two kilometers of bike path including the planting of over 200 new trees.

traffic restrictions and diversions

As already announced, the construction work will bring some traffic restrictions with it from June 2025. Motorized traffic is blocked on Stadionallee, which will lead to occasional diversions. Bus line 77a will be diverted during this time, whereby a new bus concept in connection with the commissioning of line 18 is still communicated.

The planned expansion is not only an important step for improving Viennese mobility, but also reflects similar developments throughout public transport. Minister of Transport Leonore Gewessler and the city council for OKIS Peter Hanke are based on the fact that the progress of the infrastructure projects does not stall after the upcoming election of the National Council. The BUND supports the city of Vienna in the financing of various projects, including the U2xu5 line cross, which is the largest climate protection project in Vienna, such as 5min reported.

So it is emerging: Soon the Vienna public landscape will soon become even more attractive. The number of users on annual tickets of the Viennese lines and climatic cards already show that the city is on the right track.
