Vienna rolls out: Police are fighting e-scooter accidents!

Innere Stadt, Österreich - in Vienna the e-scooters sprout like mushrooms out of the ground, but that also has its dark sides. The police have alarming numbers in view and starts today, on June 5, 2025, the “Vienna rolls safely” campaign, which aims at safe use of the popular electric scooters. According to the data of the Vienna police, two people cost the life in 2024 in accidents with e-scooters and 400 were injured. The increase in use not only leads to more drivers, but also to more accidents. One more reason to draw the population aware of the risks, as meinzirk.at reports.

"Vienna rolls safely": Three pillars for more security

The campaign is made up of three pillars. The first pillar includes prevention work that draws attention to frequent violations. This includes, for example, the incorrect use of walkers, the simultaneous use of a scooter from several people or driving against the one -way street. These disadvantages are not only dangerous, but also endanger other road users, such as Kurier.at.

The focus is on repression. E-scooter drivers are treated like drivers, especially when alcohol is involved. Penalties can be between 800 and 5,900 euros, and the driver's license can also be questioned. An example of this are the measures of a focus campaign in March, in which four impaired drivers were drawn from the traffic. This afternoon, over 300 ads in connection with e-scooters were recorded.

A safety net for all road users

The third pillar of the campaign is aimed at parents and other road users to raise awareness of the safe use of the e-scooters. Two informative folders are distributed to convey the correct handling of the e-scooters and to ensure the safety of all road users.

The numbers speak for themselves: According to a nationwide statistics, the number of e-scooter accidents with personal injury in 2023 rose by 14.1 % to 9,425 accidents. The most common causes of accidents are incorrect use of roads - this affects almost 19.4 % of cases - and alcohol influence, which is responsible for around 15.1 %. Young adults are particularly at risk: 41.6 % of the victims were under 25, while only 3.4 % of those over 65 came. In addition, a total of 22 people died in e-scooter accidents in 2023, which represents a doubling compared to the previous year, as reported.

With the campaign "Vienna rolls safely", the Viennese police would like to counteract the increasing risk of accidents. The information obtained for rules and laws for the use of the e-scooters is made available on posters and leaflets, using QR codes users get to clear explanatory videos. Finally, security has the first thing to ensure carefree driving in the streets of Vienna.
