In order to be able to cool with a light conscience on hot days, an ice storage is also built in the refrigeration center on the Alsergrund. This not only enables the cover of consumption tips, but also promotes more efficient operation of the entire system. In a process that enables the chillers to cool water to about 5 degrees Celsius, the cool water can then be used for heat absorption in connected buildings. This includes not only office buildings, but also important institutions such as the General Hospital (AKH), the Musical Theater Ronacher and the Natural History Museum (NHM).
In Munich, on the other hand, a similar strategy is followed with the project "Innovative and Army of CO2 long-distance cold supply for the city center district in Munich". Here the new refrigeration system at the south energy location is already used from highly efficient systems for district heating, which is an ecological advantage over decentralized cooling systems. Around two thirds of CO2 emissions are to be saved. A connection to excess district heating from renewable or CO2-neutral sources is planned by 2028.
