Pride Month 2025: Austria celebrates variety in the rainbow parade!
Wien, Österreich - May the May is coming to an end and June is celebrated as a "Pride Month" in the entire German -speaking area. This is the time when the LGBTIQ+community comes to the fore its variety and indicates existing discrimination. As reported [VN] (https://www.vn.at/newsticker/pride-month-junimacht-lgbtiq-recht-recht-- Rechte- Rechte-Recht-rämmer/3177845), the Pride Month is also celebrated in Austria from May 31 to June 15th. An absolute highlight will be the rainbow parade on June 14th, in which around 300,000 participants are expected in the streets of Vienna.
The large number of events already begin with the Vienna Pride, which forms the official start of the Pride Month, so to speak. Apart from the parade, there will be a colorful program in Vienna, including the Pride Village at Rathausplatz from June 12th to 14th, where community clubs and LGBTIQ+artists: Inside their activities.
A look at the political situation
From a politically speaking, important topics are also on the agenda during the Pride Month. Core concerns are protection against discrimination in the private sector and the promised but not yet implemented ban on conversion therapies. This has already been anchored in the government program. In contrast to this promise, however, the global situation for LGBTIQ+persons is increasingly worrying, also notes the bpb. In countries such as Hungary and the USA, the rights of the LGBTIQ+community have been restricted in recent years. In Austria, public security also has its price: after an increase in hate crime, the police became active in seven federal states in March and arrested over 20 suspects. For security reasons, corresponding measures were also announced for the upcoming Pride events. Another worrying development was the alleged attack on a past Pride event, which was luckily prevented.
queer history and review
A look at the story shows that the queer community in Austria has been suppressed for a long time. Homosexuality was legally banned until 1971, and only in 2002 the last special paragraphs were abolished. Initiatives that work out the queer story are all the more important. From June 8th, short tours of Queeren History will be offered in the House of History Austria, which have been discussed with the dark chapters and the course of emancipation since the 1970s.
Interestingly, a current survey in Germany shows that 12 % of the population now identify as LGBTIQ+. While 73 % of Germans advocate protection against discrimination against LGBTIQ+persons, these positive signals have to be observed in the context: there are still 64 countries worldwide in which LGBTIQ+persons are criminalized. Homosexual actions can be punished with severe punishments, especially in countries such as Uganda, which underlines the urgency of the Pride Month activities.a sign of solidarity
The LGBTIQ+community and its supporters: In the inside, in June, a strong sign of visibility and acceptance. It is a time of celebration, but also of the struggle for rights and equality. The events as part of the Pride Month invite everyone to show themselves in solidarity and to stand up for a colorful, open society. Let us work together in Vienna for a strong festival of pride on June 14th!
