Italy's hesitation in the Gaza conflict: between diplomacy and accomplice!

Gaza, Palästina - The Israeli attack on Gaza, which has been going on for 19 months, has devastating effects on the civilian population. According to newspaper of work have been killed at least 53,000 Palestinians, including 16,000 children. Over 115,000 people were injured and more than two million were expelled from their places of residence. The military surgery "Gideon's Lear" was based on the finish line to conquer Gaza completely, and went hand in hand with hundreds of deaths, including many through hunger. School and hospitals are bombarded, while humanitarian aid goods are inadequate.

Since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023, mass protests have taken place worldwide. A demonstration in the Hague was particularly significant in which over 100,000 people took part. The support of Euratlantic countries for Israel has led to a rethink in the Italian center-left opposition, which now recognizes the Israeli crimes. In contrast, the Meloni government in Italy continues to support Israel and has been in UN resolutions on the situation in Gaza.

UN resolutions and Italian politics

Italy's abstentions in crucial UN resolutions do not remain without consequences. The relevant votes include

  • 27. October 2023: Humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza
  • 12. December 2023: Immediate humanitarian ceasefire
  • 10. May 2024: Examination of Palestine's admission as a UN member
  • 18. September 2024: End of the "illegal presence" of Israel in occupied areas

The Italian government also continued weapons sales to Israel after October 7, 2023 and voted against applications for sanctions and the recognition of Palestine. A review of the association agreement between the EU and Israel, which addresses human rights, was also rejected. The annual trade scope between the EU and Israel is around 48 billion euros.

ceasefire and humanitarian aid

On January 15, 2025, the Israeli government and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire that came into force on January 19 at 10:15 CET. According to Federal Center for Political Education should first last 42 days and comprises an end to the fights and a withdrawal of Israeli forces from strongly populated areas Gaza stripes. Palestinians who have fled to the south are allowed to return to their homework.

Humanitarian support was able to get into the Gaza Strip on the first day of the ceasefire in the form of over 630 trucks with relief goods. The reconstruction of infrastructure for water, energy and medical care should also begin. Nevertheless, the humanitarian situation remains catastrophic, as the Foreign Office . The internal displaced quota of approximately 1.9 million people does not apply to around 90 % of the population in Gaza. Lack of food, water and medical care are the order of the day. The Federal Government has increased the help of the Palestinian areas by more than 300 million euros since the beginning of the conflict to alleviate this dramatic state.

The international community is therefore looking for great challenges, while the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate and the humanitarian needs of the civilian population are difficult to satisfy.
