Austrian universities fall dramatic in the new QS Ranking!

The current QS World University Rankings 2026 are published, and the results show a significant slip by most Austrian universities in international comparison. Almost all universities in the country have lost places compared to the previous year. The best of them remains the University of Vienna , which is now in 15th place, which means a decline of 15 places (previous year: 137). The Technical University of Vienna follows in 197, also with a minus of 7 places (previous year: 190).

The University of Innsbruck makes it to the third place of the local universities, but crashed to 350th place (previous year: 309). The TU Graz has also fallen and is now 427 (previous year: 413). The University of Linz is just 500, with 473 (previous year: 472).

A look at the relegated and promoted

The University of Salzburg has lost the most and finished the ranking to 650th place (previous year: 601-610). The only Austrian university that was able to improve is the University of Graz , which is now in 668 (previous year: 671-680). At the end of the list you will finally find the University of Klagenfurt, which also recorded a decline with 697 (previous year: 611-620).

A central reason for this negative development is the poorer values in the employer survey, which also influenced employment results and citation. Six of the eight Austrian universities received lower ratings in these categories than in the previous year.

global competition

In global view, the universities from the USA and Great Britain continue to dominate the top ten of the ranking. For the 13th time in a row, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (with), followed by the Imperial College London and Stanford University. The best continental European university remains the University of Zurich in place, how competitive the universities in this region are.

The increasing importance of the factors such as employment and sustainability in the rankings could be doomed to Austrian universities if they are not added in these areas. The employer survey and the reputation, which many top universities like with or the Yale University keep in the first places, have to focus more on the focus if local universities want to do better. A better understanding of the needs of the labor market and a sustainable orientation of the courses could be a step in the right direction.
