Farmers debate in Söll: Hof handover, EU and the future of agriculture!
At the Hinterfirsthof in Söll, numerous farmers and interested parties came together to discuss the current topics of agriculture. As part of the district round organized by the Tyrol Chamber of Agriculture, EU membership was not only looked back on the past 30 years, but also dealt with central aspects such as handover and the future of agricultural policy. LK President Josef Hechenberger spoke about the diverse changes in agricultural policy since joining the EU and emphasized that the serves to secure the supply of affordable foods.
In Tyrol, impressive 91% of the companies participate in the ÖPUL program, which promotes sustainable management. Hechenberger called for practical requirements to optimize the conditions for farmers. These are of great importance, especially in times like these when the current GAP period runs by 2027. The Chamber of Agriculture is already planning new strategies in order to continue to give farmers good business in the future.
gap and their mechanisms
The EU created a legal framework with the GAP, which came into force on January 1, 2023, which supports around 10 million farms. As the European Commission , this support is not only important for farmers themselves, but also for the entire society that depends on agriculture. The GAP aims to secure cheap foods and at the same time protect the environment. For example, farmers are currently generating income that is on average 40 % among those in other sectors.
Especially in the funding period 2023–2027, sustainable developments in rural areas are of great importance. The new GAP strategy plans should also contribute to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal and the biodiversity strategy. The financing, which is provided via two funds in the EU budget, enables farmers to work costly and can preserve biodiversity.
handover - a challenge for the future
A central theme of the meeting was handover. Christine Lintner addressed the sensitivity that such a handover brings with it. The “Life Quality Bauernhof” project offers support with individual advice and seminars for interested successors. District chairman Michael Jäger emphasized how essential functioning handover is for nationwide management. The increasing awareness of the challenges such as ground pressure and wild animals as well as the opportunities that arise in cooperation with tourism are key elements.
The Fuchs family, host of the event, has been running their Hinterfirsthof since 1930. 18 hectares of grassland are held 18 dairy cows, whose milk is delivered to the “Back to the origin” project. In addition, the family offers a vacation at the farm and brings out its own award -winning schnapps distillery. Jakob Fuchs sen. referred to the commitment of the young generation in agriculture and underlined the importance of a positive perspective for the future of the state house.
The district round has once again shown that it is not only about the preservation of traditions, but also about a future -oriented agriculture that is both economically and ecologically conceivable. The gap plays an indispensable role in this by paving the way for sustainable agriculture and at the same time keeping the needs of farmers in mind.
