historical review of women's policy in Austria

The choice of the new management team falls into a historical context that is characterized by significant achievements and challenges in women's policy. Thanks to consistent reforms, the political landscape in Austria has changed significantly since the 1970s. This era was characterized by the women's movement that initiated profound reforms in equality between men and women. Important milestones include the decriminalization of abortion in 1975 and the family law reform, which abolished the role of man as head of the family. Under the leadership of the SPÖ, several laws were adopted that should sustainably improve the life situation of women, such as the equal treatment law of 1979 and the introduction of the Ministry of Women 1990.

A comprehensive catalog of measures that can be called up on the website of the SPÖ women includes various family-political and socio-political points. The most important reforms include the introduction of parental leave as a replacement time to pension insurance and the introduction of the mother-child pass. Even in recent years, important steps were taken, such as the gender quota for supervisory boards, which was introduced in 2018 in listed companies in order to increase the proportion of women in management positions.

Current challenges in equality

Despite these progress, it shows that there are still many challenges. In Austria, the gender Pay-GAP remains high with 18.4 %, which represents the second highest value in the EU. For the safety of women, the high number of female female, which recently counted 21 cases, is alarming. The missing places in women's shelters are also a critical topic that urgently needs to be addressed. In addition to the continuation of successful equality measures, the demands also include pressing concerns such as salary transparency and improved violence protection.

With the newly elected team of the SPÖ women Imst, another chapter is now being opened in the history of women's policy in Austria. The visions and goals that have been formulated here are an expression of a clear commitment to the future and underline the importance of continued to stand up for equality and justice in society.
