Tragic climbing accident: 18-year-old falls to death in iron ore
Eisenerz, Österreich - A tragic incident shook the mountaineering community in Styria last Saturday. An 18-year-old Viennese died on a climbing tour in the municipal area of Eisenerz. The young man had previously successfully mastered the popular "Archdow-Johann-Krettersteig" with two friends. The relegation path, which is partly secured, led the trio towards the picturesque Leopoldsteinersee.
During a steep crossing area, the 18-year-old slid on gravel and crashed about 200 meters into a rock-enforced channel. Despite the rapid intervention of the rescue workers, the emergency doctor of the rescue helicopter was only able to determine the death of the young man. This incident came completely unexpected for his two friends who had to witness the fall. The mountain rescuers escorted them into the valley and handed them over to a crisis intervention team that took care of the two shocked young people until their parents picked them up. The body of the accident was recovered with a police helicopter, reports the Kurier .
an accident with tragic consequences
What exactly led to this accident is still unclear and is currently being examined by the alpine police. However, it is not an isolated case: In Austria, over 8,000 alpine accidents occur annually, as the Austrian Board of Trustees for Alpine Security (ÖKAS) documents. The accident statistics have been managed by the alpine police since 2005/06, with fatal accidents and those with suspected external negligence. The database offers important findings for prevention work in mountain sports, but also shows the dangers associated with climbing here .
The district around Graz is known for its impressive via ferrata and attracts numerous mountain freaks. However, these nature experiences have their price if you don't take security seriously. The experiences of other climbers show that the correct assessment of the site and the observation of the weather conditions are decisive.
upgrade for more security
In view of the current tragedy, the alpine police are planning to start further reconnaissance campaigns for safety in the alpine room. The statistical evaluations illustrate the need to point out inexperienced climbers in particular on the dangers that are hidden in the mountains. Prevention and enlightenment will focus even more in the future to prevent such tragic accidents as those that happened last Saturday reports Orf Styria .The fate of the young Viennese leaves not only grief with friends and family, but also questions about security when climbing in the Styrian mountains. Stay careful and enjoy nature safe!
