Physics Olympics 2025: Talents from the region triumph in Frankfurt!

At the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium in Frankfurt (Oder), the state finals of the Physics Olympiad took place on June 8, 2025. This event attracted 63 talented pupils in grades 7 to 12 from 21 schools who were able to demonstrate their skills in one of the most exciting subjects. The competition, which was held over two days, was made up of a four -hour theoretical exam and practical experiments, which the participants put through their paces. The award ceremony took place in the impressive Leibnitz Institute for Innovative Microelectronics (IHP), which also acted as a supporter of the event and thus promotes the scientific-technical offspring. The Minister of Education Steffen Freiberg congratulated the young scientists and addressed the importance of such student competitions to deepen the interest in natural sciences.

The results that the participants achieved were extremely gratifying. In grade 8, Eduard Ludwig Wingerter from the Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Gymnasium Potsdam won first place, while his school colleague Philipp Rex was also able to take home the golden medal in grade 9. In the tenth grade, Marco Schulze from the Max Steenbeck-Gymnasium Cottbus shone, which also received a special price. The grades 11 and 12 were dominated by Alexander Zweig and Robin Markus Wellner, both from the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium.

The competition was not only characterized by the impressive performance of the participants, but also by an interesting supporting program. On the first day, the participants received lunch after their arrival and a group photo, followed by the theoretical exam, which dealt with demanding topics such as weightlessness when driving and the behavior of freight trains. In the evening, the young people awaited a visit to the planetarium, which perfectly rounded off the day. The next day started with an internship experiment that dealt with the loading and unloading of a capacitor, where Gero Barthel from grade 11 was particularly shone.

In addition to the regular prices, special prices were awarded. Kiana Schwarzbach, also grade 12 from the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium, was able to look forward to a special prize of the Ministry of Education. Charlotte Schuster, grade 7, received a special prize from the school management of the Gauß-Gymnasium. The award ceremony took place in the Leibnitz Institute before the students were able to go home.

look into the future

The next highlight for the physics -loving students is already facing: the 34th state Olympics, whose start is planned at the beginning of the coming school year. The Physics Olympics in Germany is not only an exciting competition, but also a selection competition for the International Physics Olympics (IPHO). Pupils can be happy to demonstrate their knowledge of four rounds and not only to establish new contacts, but also to expand their horizons. The first round started on April 1, 2023 and ends in mid -September 2023 - an invitation to everyone who is enthusiastic about physics!

The commitment and success of these young talents clearly show that in Austria's classrooms, a lot of potential is slumbering that is only waiting to be encouraged and discovered.
