Domaine 1196 opened: A dream path for Styrian wine in Gamlitz!
Gamlitz, Österreich - in Gamlitz, the Domaine 1196 was ceremoniously opened by Siegfried Wolf on June 7, 2025. Around 300 guests gathered in order not only to celebrate the new wine operations, but also to appreciate a special lifelong dream of the entrepreneur. Wolf, who is deeply rooted with the Styrian culture, emphasized in his speech the desire to return the region and viticulture. "Domaine 1196 should become a center for wine culture and tourism," says Wolf.
The name "Domaine 1196" refers to a significant year in the history of viticulture in Styria, when the first documentary mentions of the viticulture were documented. The domain manages an impressive 42 hectares of its own vineyards and is responsible for a total of 100 hectares in the best locations in South Styria and the Mittelburgenland. The historical vines in the Ried Sonneck, which accommodate some of the oldest plants in the region, are particularly worth mentioning
a place of encounter and knowledge
In addition to the wine surfaces, an “urbaneas” was built as an architectural retreat for visitors. This facility not only offers the possibility of relaxation, but should also serve as a space for wine experiences and formation. The existing, publicly accessible wine teaching trail is the first step in this direction and is ideal for wine lovers who want to learn more about the Styrian wine culture.
In the long term, Wolf plans a comprehensive wine experience center including a restaurant and accommodation. "This is an investment in quality and people," said Wolf. During the opening, the guests were able to enjoy tours through the Ried Sonneck and experience a presentation of an autonomous vineyard robot - an innovative approach to show the future of viticulture.
tradition meets innovation
Claims on high quality and tradition not only show the architectural design, but also the wine producers who shape the stylistic alignment of the winery. Reinhard Muster underlines the variety of rieders and the special terroir, which is crucial for the production of high -class wines. Albert Gesellmann brings his know-how for red wines and combines Burgenland grapes with Styrian traditions.
The solemn consecration of the basement by Bishop Alois Schwarz and the congratulations of the Styrian governor Mario Kunasek illustrate the high priority that Domaine 1196 has for the region. In his speech, Kunasek emphasized the advertising value for Styria, while the guests were able to taste the different wines in a sociable atmosphere during a flying dinner.
The history of viticulture in Styria goes back to the Roman Empire when the wine was worshiped as a divine drink. Since then, viticulture has developed decisively and with events such as the now opened Domaine 1196 it becomes clear that the region would like to continue to play a pioneering role in the Austrian wine landscape. Thanks to strict wine laws and a new Rieden Ordinance, which creates transparency about the origin of the grapes, Styria is very popular today for wine lovers from all over the world.
