Kitchen dispute escalated: man arrested after a fatal knife attack on woman
Puchstraße, Graz, Österreich - A kitchen dispute in Graz on June 5, 2025 led a serious incident, which once again indicates the dangers of knife attacks. A 49-year-old man is suspected of having thrown a kitchen knife in her direction during a dispute with his 51-year-old wife. The incident occurred according to police.news around 5:40 p.m. in a restaurant in Puchstrasse, where both were busy. The knife got stuck in the upper body of the woman and caused serious injuries that required emergency operation in the LKH Graz. The woman's condition is now stable while her husband has been arrested and is now in a police retention center.
The alarmed work colleagues of the two were probably the first to react to the incident and told the emergency services. It is a tragic and worrying development that once again illustrates the problem of violence in family relationships. In extreme cases, frequent clashes in partnerships lead to incidents that often shake deeply not only those affected, but also uninvolved third parties.
The threatening reality: increase in knife attacks
The current incident is a statistics in worrying: knives are the most common murder weapon in Austria. As reported by the Kleine Zeitung, the number of knife attacks rose sharply in 2023. In 2013, 1,524 acts were reported with stab weapons, while this number rose to 2,393 in 2022. In the first half of the year in particular, there were several knife attacks, some of which had fatal consequences.
In our neighboring country Linz, for example, a 21-year-old was stabbed on open street on January 5, a dispute over a woman was the background. Other cities also experienced similar incidents, whereby the increase in knife attacks turns out to be a worrying tendency. Many of these attacks could be traced back to personal conflicts, but there are other cases in which uninvolved third parties were sacrificed.
political reactions and prevention measures
In view of the increasing figures, the authorities considered how to meet the problem. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) plans a general ban on weapons in public space to defuse the situation. At the moment there is already the possibility to issue weapon ban zones in certain zones, such as at the Vienna Praterstern. According to Puls24, help to restrict the dangers by carrying knives and thus increase the general safety. The problem is complex, and while a general ban is being discussed, the investigation in the case of the knife attack in Graz is still at the beginning. The crime department of the Graz city police command has started the investigation and will further clarify the background of the incident, while the company has to think about how to counteract such escalating situations in the future.
