Alcoholized e-scooter drivers: falls and clashes in Salzburg!

In the past few days, alarming traffic accidents have occurred in Salzburg and Upper Austria, which, due to alcohol at the wheel, have sparked a critical discussion about the use of e-scooters and bicycles. According to Kurier were two men at the wrong place-alcoholized drivers who were on the road with e-scooters to get injuries.

A 26-year-old Salzburg fell with his e-scooter and injured his head because he was not wearing a helmet and was traveling with 1.46 per thousand. A similar incident occurred in the Upper Austrian St. Georgen in the Attergau a few hours later. Here a 22-year-old man also plunged without a helmet, with 1.18 per thousand, and was taken to the hospital.

e-scooter and alcohol-a dangerous duo

The use of e-scooters has increased significantly since its introduction in 2019, but this also raved about the number of accidents. As the kfv , the number of e-scooter injuries treated in the hospital in Austria rose from 1,200 Terrifying 6,000 in 2023. It is particularly noticeable that 12% of the incorrect e-scooter drivers were alcoholic-compared to only 4% for cars and 3% in motorcycle accidents.

The influence of alcohol on e-scooter accidents is larger than in other means of transport. The statistics show that 90% of the alcoholic e-scooter drivers had over 1.0 per thousand, and 28% were even over 2.0 per thousand. It is therefore not surprising that the Board of Trustees is demanding a helmet obligation for adults to increase security on the streets.

racing bike accidents as a further challenge

Even among racing cyclists, the risk does not seem to decrease. An 18-year-old racing cyclist collided in Salzburg with an oncoming French driver. Both could not avoid despite braking attempts. While the 36-year-old French racing cyclist was not alcoholized and consequently did not pay any injuries, his Austrian colleague had a alcoholic value of 1.3.

It is clear that both e-scooter drivers and cyclists have to show more careful behavior, especially if alcohol is involved. The KFV calls some safety tips that should be followed: wearing a helmet, no alcoholic journeys, and careful driving in road traffic.

The way to improve

With increasing number of accidents, the call for more security on the streets is also growing. A survey showed that 70% of the population supports a helmet obligation for e-scooter drivers. In addition, a throttling of the speed to 20 km/h and the introduction of additional safety measures such as bells and turn signals is required to further reduce the risk of accidents.

In order to improve the dynamics of safety in road traffic, it is crucial that users of e-scooters and bicycles assume more responsibility. A good knack for driving, taking into account the traffic rules and, last but not least, avoiding alcohol are step by step the key to a safer traffic situation for everyone.
