Unemployment in Wels: Dramatic increase meets all age groups

Wels, Österreich - The situation on the labor market in the Wels region remains tense. According to current reports, 4,483 people which means an increase of 6.6 % compared to the previous year. Young women under the age of 25 and men over 55 are particularly affected by the development.

A closer look at the numbers shows that the unemployment number has increased from 331 to 2,957 in the city of Wels. In the neighboring Wels-Land there are 239 to 1,526. The number of unemployed in Marchtrenk, where 392 people have lost their jobs, is particularly high, followed by Stadl-Paura with 160 and Thalheim with 159.

Unemployment in Wels shows a dramatic increase: in October 2023 was the number of unemployed by 23.1 % higher than in the previous year. While unemployment in Austria has increased by 18 %, Wels with an increase of 23.1 % and the annual increase of the persons registered by 838 more than in the previous year remains particularly noticeable.

The situation among the long -term unemployed, which also increases in the region, is also worrying. In October 2023 alone, 1,046 people were registered in training and further education offers, which represents an increase of 59 compared to the previous year. The most common affected are women whose unemployment rose by 26 %, while men recorded an increase of 20.7 %.

Last May there were a total of 375,347 people without employment or training, which corresponds to an increase of 6.9 % compared to the previous year. This development particularly affects the federal states of Upper Austria and Salzburg, where the industries manufacture of goods and trade have come under great pressure.

The causes of the persistently high unemployment are diverse. The situation has many facets from an imbalance between supply and demand on the labor market to the effects of covid-19 pandemic. Long -term unemployment has turned out to be particularly worrying: around 90,951 people were long -term unemployed in Austria, an increase of 11.7 % compared to the previous year.

The numbers are alarming and show that there is still a lot of action to improve the situation on the job market. The AMS has announced that it will develop strategies to stabilize unemployment, but the challenges remain.
