In a future-oriented initiative, the district waste association (BAV) Vöcklabruck and Energie AG Environment are now relating to environmentally friendly electric trucks in 52 municipalities in the Vöcklabruck district. This environmentally conscious measure comes into time when traffic and its emissions are increasingly becoming the focus of climate protection measures. Last year, a total of 6400 tons of waste paper were collected in the Vöcklabruck district, which underlines the importance of this initiative.
The need to switch to electric truck
The entire traffic sector is faced with the challenge of significantly reducing CO2 emissions. However, only about 2% of the trucks are electrically in the industry. In the case of longer transports, the diesel truck remains the preferred choice due to loading times, but the company hopes for technical progress that can shorten the loading times and make electric truck more competitive.

Road freight transport represents a central topic in climate protection. As the DIW summarizes, many of the currently used heavy commercial vehicles are over 3.5 tons and these cause not inconsiderable emissions in the transport sector. In 2022, commercial vehicles were responsible for around 28% of emissions, which underlines the need for switching to electrically operated vehicles. The focus is on the replacement of diesel truck by battery-electrical systems and the necessary expansion of the quick charging infrastructure.
The challenges in implementing these objectives require a quick increase in the number of electrical trucks in road traffic. The EU has already announced that the emissions of new trucks have to be reduced by 45% compared to 2019 by 2030. This change is a great opportunity not only to relieve the environment, but also to secure economic advantages in the long term.
