The 68th Federal Swabia Ball recently took place in the town hall of Gerlingen, Baden-Württemberg. The event, which is deeply rooted in the culture of the Hungarian German community, attracted several hundred guests from all over Europe, including many from Hungary. Mayor Dirk Oestringer warmly welcomed the arriving and emphasized the importance of the event for the cultural connections between Germany and Hungary. The Federal Swabian Ball, which was under the motto "100 years of Swabia's balls of the Hungarian Germans" this year, celebrates not only a long tradition, but also the diversity and the exchange between the two cultures.
The guests of honor of the evening included well-known personalities such as Ibolya Hock-Englende, the chairwoman of the Landesselbstverwaltung of the Hungarian Germans, and Dr. András Izsák and Albrecht Sellner. These important guests contributed to the festive atmosphere of the evening. The absolute highlight of the event was the invasion of the traditional costumes, followed by the hymn of the Germans from Hungary and a magnificent traditional costume with 128 traditional bearers, which presented the rich legacy of Hungarian German costume.
art and culture in focus
A special focus was also on the mouthpainter Paulus Ploier, whose work exhibition in the town hall of Gerlingen until September 14th. Ploier, who was awarded the "Life Award" in 2011, is a full member of the association of oral and footlike artists. His art represents an important contribution to sensitization for the talents and possibilities of people with disabilities.
like the Landsmannschaft der Deutsche from Hungary reports, the federal swab ball is not only a festival, but also a platform to strengthen the Hungarian-German cultural exchange. This idea came alive as part of dance performances by the Leőwey dance group from Pécs/Fünfkirchen and the Hungarian Folklore ensemble from Wernau. The “Schnapskapelle” from Pécs, which accompanied the guests until late hours, provided musical entertainment.
prepared for the future
The commitment to Hungarian culture also extends beyond the federal swab ball. The Trachtag , which took place for the ninth time this year, brought together families and organizations to promote the cultural heritage and values of the Hungarian German community. Participants proudly presented their traditional costumes and combined them with everyday clothing to set a sign of cultural diversity.
These events show how important it is not only to preserve memories of traditions, but also to inspire future generations for their cultural origin. The next edition of the traditional costume day is already planned for April 2024, which shows that the Hungarian German community strives to keep its traditions alive and pass them on to the coming generations.
